How Should I Clean My Horse’s Rugs? 🧼
Horse rugs have a pretty tough life. They’re rolled in, rubbed against fences, covered in mud, sweat and hair, and occasionally used as an expensive scratching post!
Whether it’s a lightweight cotton, a fly rug, a canvas, or your horse’s favourite waterproof winter rug, regular cleaning can help keep rugs comfortable and extend their usable life.
So, what’s the best way to tackle that pile of dirty rugs?
1️⃣ Start with a good brush
Before reaching for the hose or washing machine, remove as much hair, dirt and dried mud as possible.
Hang the rug securely over a fence or rail and:
Shake off loose dirt and bedding.
Use a stiff brush or broom to remove dried mud.
Remove any grass seeds or burrs caught in the fabric or Velcro.
Be sure to pay particular attention to areas around the shoulders and chest where sweat and grease can build up. If the rug is covered in wet mud, let it dry first. Dried mud is considerably easier to brush off.
2️⃣Check the care label
Not all horse rugs should be washed the same way. Before washing, check the manufacturer’s instructions, particularly for waterproof and technical fabrics.
Depending on the rug, you may need to hand wash, cold wash or use a gentle cycle. The care label may also advise against detergents, softeners, or stain removers for the specific material used. As for drying, most rugs will advise a simple line dry rather than a tumble dry.
If in doubt, a gentle approach is usually best.
3️⃣ Now, off to the machine!
Many lightweight cotton, polycotton and mesh rugs can be machine washed, provided the manufacturer’s instructions allow it.
Before putting a rug into the machine:
Remove as much dirt and hair as possible.
Fasten Velcro tabs so they don’t catch on the fabric.
Secure loose straps and buckles.
It is then important to follow the care label instructions regarding cycle and wash type.
One thing to remember is that horse rugs become extremely heavy when wet. So just because there is “spare space”, don’t be tempted to overload your machine, as it will quickly become heavy and fault as it tries to spin! Especially if using a household machine, larger rugs, such as winter doonas, may simply be too much. In this case, a professional horse rug cleaner or suitable commercial washing machine is a much safer option.
4️⃣ Dry your rugs properly
This step is just as important as washing.
After cleaning:
Hang the rug somewhere with good airflow.
Spread it out as much as possible.
Turn or reposition heavy rugs to help both sides dry.
Make sure thick linings are completely dry.
Never fold and store a rug while it is still damp. Packing away a damp rug is a great way to open your rug cupboard several months later and discover an unpleasant combination of mould, mildew and that unmistakable damp-horse-rug smell!
💦 What about my waterproof rugs?
Waterproof rugs need a little more TLC. Their outer fabric is designed to help keep rain out while remaining breathable, and incorrect washing can affect their performance.
🕰️ When cleaning a waterproof rug:
Always follow the manufacturer’s washing instructions.
Avoid hot water.
Avoid harsh detergents.
Don’t use fabric softener.
Avoid bleach and aggressive stain removers.
Use a specialist rug or technical fabric wash where recommended.
Don’t scrub waterproof material excessively.
Avoid tumble drying unless specifically permitted.
If water no longer beads on the outside of the rug, it may also be time to consider reproofing it with an appropriate product.
🧥 What about canvas rugs?
Canvas rugs are a common sight in Australian paddocks and can last for years when properly looked after. Rather than regularly putting them through a washing machine, brush them frequently, hose off any excessive dirt as required, spot-clean particularly dirty areas and always allow them to dry thoroughly. Re-waterproofing is also a viable option if the integrity is weakening. Check the care label of manufacturers advice for recommendations.
Your quick horse rug cleaning checklist ✔️
Before packing your rugs away:
✔️ Brush: Remove hair, dirt and mud.
✔️ Check: Read the manufacturer’s care instructions.
✔️ Wash: Use the appropriate method for the fabric.
✔️ Be gentle: Avoid excessive heat and harsh detergents.
✔️ Dry: Make sure the entire rug is completely dry.
✔️ Inspect: Check straps, buckles, stitching and fabric.
✔️ Repair: Fix small problems before they become big ones.
✔️ Reproof: Treat waterproof rugs when required.
✔️ Store: Keep clean rugs somewhere dry and protected from rodents.
A good-quality horse rug isn’t cheap, so a little maintenance goes a long way. And while your horse might undo all your hard work with one enthusiastic roll in the mud, regular cleaning and maintenance can keep your rugs comfortable, functional and ready for another season.
