Ptosis is one of those words that turns up the moment you start reading about breast lift surgery, usually with nobody stopping to explain it.
It describes where the breast and ni**le sit relative to the inframammary fold, the natural crease underneath the breast. Doctors grade it from 1 (mild) through to 3 (severe), with a separate pattern called pseudoptosis, where the ni**le position looks unchanged but the tissue has dropped below the fold.
Two things worth knowing. The grade describes anatomy, it does not prescribe a procedure. And it is assessed in person, because it depends on measurement against your own anatomy rather than how something looks in a photograph.

What is a piece of medical language you have run into that nobody bothered to explain?

If you're weighing up a cosmetic procedure, the AHPRA public register is worth two minutes of your time before you book anywhere. Search the practitioner's name and you'll see whether their registration is current, what type it is, and whether any conditions are attached. A clinic that's uneasy about you checking is telling you something.

Worth knowing too: MBBS and general registration are the legal minimum to practise medicine in Australia. Extra fellowships reflect further training, not a different licence to operate, so it's fair to ask a practitioner what their specific qualifications mean for the procedure you're considering.

At our Annerley practice, a GP referral is required before a first consultation, and there's a 7-day cooling-off period before any procedure.
