STORY ALERT: My father opened me up to the magnificent world of Middle Eastern Music. And this is an early demonstration of how. It was 1996. My father, the man who since his early adolescence had practised keyboard 6 hours a day for years, through wars, had just been accepted to perform at Lebanon’s largest talent show at the time: Studio El Fan. He was ecstatic. Since it was aired LIVE, it was super high-stakes and operated a strict policy on musical interpretation. You had to perform your chosen piece, as it was composed. No ifs. No buts. But if you’ve been to any of our shows, you know… That’s not how my father works 😆. He takes ideas, bends them, and breaks them. 
Arranging music the way he wanted to hear it whilst respecting the source. So he hitched a plan with the percussionist. “I’m going to go off script live on stage. Follow me.” Whilst hesitant, he trusted my father and obliged. Then the lights came up. 
The cameras rolled. 
A country was watching. And somewhere inside a beautiful work of Abdel Halim Hafez, he left the score behind. Just my father, a percussionist, and one of the most beloved songs in the Arab world being taken somewhere it had never been. 
The show’s policy said the show would not tolerate it. Backstage, the personnel were shocked. Then steaming. All of this happening LIVE. He should have been finished. BUT… He won the entire competition. And it catapulted him around the world, performing with legends like Melhem Barakat. That is the lesson I inherited long before I understood it: respect the source, then have the audacity to bend it and innovate.
