Bridging the gap between hydrotherapy and learn-to-swim lessons for children with disability.

20/09/2026

This week is an opportunity to celebrate Deaf people and recognise the importance of creating accessible and inclusive communities.

At Flipper Academy, we understand that every child is different, including the way they communicate, learn and engage with the world around them.

For our team, getting to know each child and understanding their individual communication and learning needs is an important part of creating a supportive environment in the pool. 🐬

We work closely with families to understand what helps their child feel comfortable and engaged, so they can participate in our programs in a way that suits them.

Because every child deserves to feel welcomed, understood and included. 💙

Every child has unique needs, both in and out of the water. Our 1:1 hydrotherapy sessions create a serene environment where your child can thrive and feel at ease, while our sister service, PhysKids, provides paediatric physiotherapy in a land-based setting.

Guided by an experienced physiotherapist, each session is customised to address your child's specific requirements, ensuring they receive focused care and encouragement throughout their journey.

Reach out today to discover how our tailored approach can make an impact on your child.

For children with disability, the water can provide a unique environment to move, participate and explore new skills with the right support.

Chelsea explains how factors such as buoyancy, warm water and the sensory experience of being in the pool can all play a role in how we structure our sessions.

At Flipper Academy, we use these properties of the aquatic environment alongside our physiotherapy-led approach to create sessions that are individualised, supportive and engaging for every child. ✨

Because sometimes, the water can provide an environment where a child can participate in ways that may look different to land. 💙

And while Flipper focuses on physiotherapy-led aquatic programs, we know that children may also benefit from physiotherapy support outside of the pool. Our sister service, PhysKids, provides paediatric physiotherapy for children with disability and additional needs in a land-based setting.

World Physiotherapy Day is an opportunity to recognise the work physiotherapists do for individuals, families and communities, and today, we're celebrating our own Flipper physios!🐬

Did you know that Flipper Academy was founded by physiotherapist Chelsea?

Chelsea created Flipper with a vision to provide children with disability the opportunity to participate in aquatic programs through a physiotherapy-led approach.

Physiotherapy continues to be at the centre of what we do. Our physios are involved in assessing children, developing individualised programs, supporting our team and working closely with families throughout their time at Flipper. 💙

Happy World Physiotherapy Day to our team and physiotherapists across the community! ✨

💙 'It's been amazing. Chelsea and the team have been fantastic.'

One of our Flipper dads shares his family's experience with Chelsea and the team.

We're incredibly grateful for the trust our families place in us and are proud to create a welcoming, family-centred environment where every child is supported in their own unique journey through the water.

Thank you to this wonderful family for sharing their experience with the Flipper Academy community.

At Flipper Academy, every session is physiotherapy-led and tailored to the individual child.

Our programs are designed around each child's needs, with a focus on:

• aquatic skill development
• building confidence in the water
• gross motor skill development
• water safety.

These elements help shape sessions that are engaging, individualised, and centred around each child's participation in the water.

Supporting a child often means supporting the whole team around them.

At Flipper Academy, we know that many of the children and families we work with are also supported by speech pathologists and other allied health professionals. By working collaboratively with speech pathologists, we gain a better understanding of each child's communication strategies, helping us create a more supportive and responsive environment in the pool.

This collaborative approach helps us tailor our sessions to each child's individual needs while providing a more connected, family-centred experience.

This Speech Pathology Week, we'd like to recognise and thank the speech pathologists who work every day to support children and their families. Your dedication, expertise, and partnership make a meaningful difference to the children we support. 💙

Here's to celebrating the value of working together to help every child thrive.

This year's theme, 'stronger together, reminds us of the power of shared experiences, connection, and support in building a stronger brain injury community.

At Flipper Academy, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to participate in a supportive and inclusive environment where they feel welcomed, encouraged, and valued. Through our physiotherapy-led aquatic programs, we're proud to work alongside children, families, and the wider allied health community to help make that possible.🐬

We're stronger when we support one another, celebrate every child's unique journey, and create opportunities for all children to participate in ways that suit their individual needs.

This Brain Injury Awareness Week, we stand with children, families, carers, and professionals in raising awareness and fostering a more inclusive community, because we're Stronger Together. 💙
