Members of the Vatsonga and Machangani communities marched in Johannesburg on Friday, calling for an end to what they describe as discrimination against their communities.

The group submitted a memorandum to the Human Rights office, saying they are often mistaken for foreign nationals because of their language and culture, despite being South African citizens. They are calling for recognition, equal treatment, and the protection of their constitutional rights.

Singwa Namhla Mtwa, a 34/35 year old employee of the OR Tambo District Municipality, was shot and killed in driveway of her home in Sidwadwa View, Mthatha, Eastern Cape, South Africa. She was shot multiple times (reports consistently say nine times) while in her car, returning from work, and died at the scene.

The murder quickly drew widespread attention as a high-profile case of gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide in South Africa.

Reports and family statements alleged she was trying to leave an abusive relationship with her long-term boyfriend (of around 17 years), a prominent Mthatha businessman named Major (Mfesane/Mfesana) Bhekizulu. He was widely regarded as a person of interest, and there were claims of prior abuse.

Bhekizulu has denied any involvement, stating he had “done nothing wrong.” He was questioned by police and reportedly filed a court interdict related to the investigation. No charges were ever brought against him (or anyone else) based on available public information.

The case remains unsolved (often described as “cold”) more than three years later. No arrests have been made for the murder itself.

It has been plagued by issues like missing docket statements, administrative problems within SAPS, and was at one point linked to a bundle of dockets handled by a Political Killings Task Team (despite not appearing to be politically motivated).
