One of the most common corrections dancers hear is:
"Pull your pinky toe back and your heel forward to seal your fifth."
While this may create the "appearance" of a tighter fifth position, it doesn't actually improve your turnout.
Instead, it can encourage you to twist your feet into a position your hips may not be able to support.
When your feet are forced into more turnout than your body can control, your alignment often changes from the ground up. Without improving your center, irregular stresses can be placed on the:
✔️ Low back
✔️ Hips
✔️ Knees
✔️ Ankles
✔️ Feet
Over time, these compensations may increase your risk of discomfort or injury.
This is especially important for adult and senior ballet dancers.
As we age, natural changes in joint mobility occur. Dancers with knee degeneration, arthritis, or a history of hip replacement should be especially cautious about trying to "create" turnout by twisting through the feet, as this may place additional stress on the knees and other joints.
Instead of forcing the shape, focus on building the movement.
Here are three healthier ways to improve your fifth position:
✔️ 1. Accept your body's anatomy.
Every dancer has different hip structure, joint mobility, and turnout potential. There is no single "perfect" fifth position that fits everyone.
✔️ 2. Prioritize function over appearance.
A well aligned fifth that respects your body's mechanics will serve your dancing far better than forcing the image of an idealized ballet position.
✔️ 3. Improve turnout where it actually begins.
Develop hip mobility by combining mobility work, stretching, deep external rotator strengthening, core stability, and movement training. These are the qualities that help you build stronger, healthier turnout over time.
Your goal isn't to make your feet look more turned out.
Your goal is to create turnout your body can actually support. (And yes, it does take hard work!)
If you're looking for time manageable workouts to improve your turnout through mobility, strength, and ballet specific technique, my Veronica K Ballet Online Platform has newly updated self paced courses designed specifically for adult and senior ballet dancers.
These step by step programs teach you how to build healthier turnout without forcing your joints into positions they cannot safely control.

More relevés are not always the answer to better balance.
Relevés are an important part of ballet training. They develop plantar flexor strength, foot control, and ankle stability.
But BALANCE is a much broader skill.
Your body improves balance by learning how to respond to changing demands:
✓ Narrowing your base of support
✓ Removing predictable arm positions
✓ Adding movement and coordination challenges
✓ Training on different surfaces
✓ Incorporating head and visual system challenges
Balance is not just about how high or long you can hold your relevés.
It is about how your brain, muscles, joints, and sensory systems work together to keep you controlled and adaptable.
This is especially important for adult and senior ballet dancers who want to continue dancing with strength, confidence, and longevity.
As a Certified Personal Trainer, my approach combines ballet technique, movement science, and injury prevention strategies to help dancers build a body that supports their artistry for years to come.

Improving your plié is not always about just stretching more.
Ankle mobility, calf flexibility, strength, and alignment all work together to create a more efficient and comfortable movement pattern.
When a dancer feels limited in their plié, the first step is identifying what may be contributing to that limitation. Sometimes the body is compensating through the feet and ankles, which can affect how much available ankle range of motion you can access.
Active mobility drills allow you to explore movement while maintaining control, rather than simply forcing more range.
In this reel, I share two progressions that focus on ankle mobility while emphasizing proper turnout, core engagement, and pelvic alignment.
Remember, mobility is one part of the process. Sustainable ballet technique comes from understanding how your body moves and training with intention.
If you are an adult or senior ballet dancer looking to improve your technique, mobility, and confidence, I offer personalized private lessons both online worldwide and in person in Peoria, Arizona.

If any of those made you want to hit unfollow... this page probably isn't for you.
I believe adult and senior ballet dancers deserve the same quality training, education, and support as any other dancer.
I believe:
1. Ballet should be challenging, but PAIN or tolerance of it is NOT the goal!
2. Your body deserves to be understood, not ignored.
3. Evidence informed training and the art of ballet can work together.
4. You're never too old to improve your mobility, technique, strength, balance, confidence, and overall function.
5. Just because your teacher did it that way, isn't a good enough excuse to pass it along.
Whether you're stepping into your first ballet class, returning after years away, or continuing your dance journey later in life, there is a place for you here at Veronica K Ballet!
I work with adult and senior ballet dancers through private and semi private training, both online worldwide and in person in Peoria, Arizona.
