Have you ever made a firm decision not to bring your phone to bed with you… but then you do it anyway, and end up scrolling incessantly through content that does the opposite of helping you fall asleep?
Yeah, me too. It’s a hard habit to break, even when we know it’s not so great for our health.
The other day I was doom-scrolling like this when several videos came up about the possible consequences of the ongoing war with Iran. I couldn’t help but start spiraling into thoughts about what it could all mean for the future of the Middle East, the U.S., my kids, my own life — and before long my anxiety was through the roof, even though physically I was safe in my own bed.
It’s a powerful reminder of how easily our nervous system can make distant or uncertain events feel like an immediate threat.
Of course, one solution is not creating the scenario in the first place by leaving the phone in another room. But it’s also helpful to know a few techniques that can help when the mind begins to spiral like this.
We’ve been exploring some of these ideas in the ACT group I’ve been leading, and I recently gathered ten of my favorite techniques into a short resource called:
A Field Guide for Overwhelm
It includes practical tools for calming the mind, regulating emotions, and reconnecting when the world feels like too much.

The upcoming 6-week Zenyasa Wellness term begins in just a few days, on Monday 2/16.
As the start of this new cycle approaches, some people feel ready to begin — and others are still sitting with the question.
Both are completely normal.
One thing I’ve discovered over the years is that when we struggle with a decision, it’s rarely because we don’t have enough information. More often, it’s because the body feels unsettled. When the nervous system is activated, everything can start to feel heavier, more urgent, or more complicated than it actually is.
Practices like movement, meditation, journaling, and coaching are designed to help the nervous system settle — creating the conditions where clarity and Wise Mind can emerge.
If you’re considering joining the upcoming term and feeling uncertain, it may help to pause and do something that steadies you before deciding.
Wise Mind usually speaks more clearly when the nervous system feels settled.

The work we offer integrates:

All programs are offered online, making it possible to participate from wherever you are, in the comfort of your own space.
As a gentle way of reconnecting and offering a feel for how everything fits together, we’re hosting a free live online gathering on Saturday, January 31st.
The gathering will include:
• a short reflective practice
• guided meditation
• gentle standing movement
• an overview of upcoming offerings
• space for questions
Participation is optional throughout — cameras optional, observing welcome, and there’s no pressure to join anything afterward.
