Some natural butters turn gritty in the jar. Ours does not, and that is a choice.

Shea is the one famous for it. Its fats can slowly recrystallise into larger, coarser grains. Mango butter nucleates far more uniformly. It sets fine and it stays fine.

That is why the mango butter is in the cremes, the hand cream and the body butter. Not for the name on a label, but because it does not go sandy on you in month four. It is also what gives them their body. The balms are a different build entirely, olive oil and beeswax.

The smell of one of these is built in layers, and the last one is the smallest.

The base is the infusion. Rose, rosemary and spearmint in one. Moringa, echinacea and rosemary in the other. Weeks of those herbs sitting in oil. That is most of what you are smelling.

Only then does one finishing note go on. Ylang ylang on the rose one, lavender on the moringa one. The note is the finish, not the formula. Only the rosemary is in both of them. Everything else in the base is different.

Oil does not go off the way food goes off. It goes stale.

Oxygen attacks the double bonds in the fatty acids and breaks them into small smelly fragments. That is rancidity. A chemical reaction, not a microbe.

That is what vitamin E actually does. It is an antioxidant, it slows that reaction, and it was never a preservative. There are no microbes to stop anyway. Nothing we make has water in it.

There are two base oils in the cremes, and they are not interchangeable.

Apricot kernel is the heavier one, mostly oleic. It stays on the skin longer. Grapeseed is the light one, mostly linoleic. It sinks in fast and leaves almost nothing behind.

Neither one alone gives the finish we want. The blend is the point. One brings the slip and the other brings the speed. Both are bought in. What we grow is what goes into them.

The oil goes into the jar clear and gold. It comes out green.

Nothing is added to do that. The colour is the plant leaving the leaf. Chlorophyll and the carotenoids are fat soluble, so they move into the oil and stay there.

The colour is not decoration. It is the visible part of an extraction you otherwise cannot see happening. Rose petals give a different colour again. You can tell the jars apart across the room.
