I think the real reason nurses are so angry about the Department of Education removing us from the professional occupation list is that it feels like yet another insult after years of giving everything we have.

We spent years in school tackling brutal coursework, clinical hours, exams, and boards most people outside healthcare don’t even know exist. We manage medications, IV drips, emergencies, critical decisions, and real human lives—while handling unsafe patient loads, chronic short staffing, and emotional stress few ever see.

We work 12-hour shifts that stretch into 14. We miss meals and holidays. We carry trauma, loss, and heartbreak home, then try to function like everything is fine.

So when “professional” is taken away from nursing, it hurts—because nurses have fought for years to be recognized, respected, and taken seriously in a system that depends on us. We advocate relentlessly, not just for patients, but for ourselves.

This isn’t about a title.
It’s about the message behind it.

If we can remove “professional” from the people who keep healthcare running, what does that say about this country’s priorities?

Nurses aren’t angry without reason. They’re exhausted from being treated like they don’t matter—and eventually, enough will be enough.
