On my previous life I worked on a project that created Pulmozyme (Dornase Alfa). A pharmaceutical that helped people with Cyatic Fibrosis, a rare genetic disorder that creates excessive mucus in the lungs but also targets pancreas, liver, kidneys and intestines. Prior to this research, people with CF had to resort in barbaric ways to clear the mucus in their lungs and offer didn’t live beyond your the age of 30 due to inflammation and infection of the lungs. Now, they can live a long productive life. However people with Cystic Fibrosis still need funding to secure medication as well as research. Agnes Martin was a Canadian-born painter who spent decades working in near total solitude - first in New York, then in a remote adobe house she built herself in New Mexico. She gave almost no interviews.
With ‘My Back to the World’ was filmed over four years in her studio in Taos, when Martin was in her late eighties. It is one of the only films in which she speaks at length about her work and her lite.
In this clip she speaks about beauty. For Martin, beauty was not a quality of objects. It was a state of mind.
