Astrid is actually pretty biddable for a Wolfdog, imo, but I think this video is a good example of a medium drive dog compared to a breed like the Belgian Malinois, which is generally much higher drive.
Astrid is happy to work, she’s willing to learn, and she clearly enjoys our training sessions…but she wants to know what’s in it for her 😂
If the paycheck disappears, so does her motivation
That’s one of the many reasons Wolfdogs generally aren’t well suited for jobs like service work. They can absolutely learn an impressive amount of behaviors, but their motivation and engagement can look very different from purpose bred working dogs.
A high drive breed like a Belgian Malinois or Doberman is often much more intensely motivated to engage with their handler and work for the sake of the interaction itself, in addition to whatever reinforcement is being offered.
But Astrid? She’s basically like, “I would LOVE to do that trick… but first, what’s in it for me?”

☀️🐾 Today Petsense by Tractor Supply hosted a Summer Pet Photo Day! It was such a fun way to spend the day 🥰
From puppies to senior dogs, we met so many adorable pets while helping pet parents make lasting summer memories 📸💛
But beyond the cute photos, one of my favorite parts of events like these is the opportunity to educate. Every family that stopped by had the chance to take home our Summer Pet Safety handout, filled with tips on preventing heat-related emergencies, recognizing the signs of heat exhaustion, and keeping pets safe during these hot summer months.
Education doesn’t always have to happen in a classroom or training session. Sometimes it happens while you’re laughing over a dog in sunglasses, posing in a kiddie pool, or watching your kids color while your pup gets their picture taken. Those conversations can make a real difference.

We’ve been working on expanding Symphony’s posing skills, and this was our newest challenge!
One of my favorite things about training is finding new ways to engage her brain while building confidence and strengthening our communication. Something as simple as learning a new position or holding a pose requires focus, body awareness, and trust — and those little challenges add up!
We had so much fun beginning to work on this, but don’t let the simplicity fool you. After only about 15 minutes of practicing, Symphony was ready for a well-earned nap. Mental enrichment is powerful!
