Forests don’t just store carbon — they can physically cool the land and help keep entire water systems functioning.
Trees pull water from the soil and release it into the atmosphere through transpiration. This movement of water acts much like a natural cooling system, lowering surface temperatures while also influencing humidity, cloud formation, and rainfall.
Forests provide several other critical services at the same time: they reduce soil erosion, protect watersheds, slow runoff, improve water quality, and help maintain more reliable freshwater supplies for surrounding communities.
A 2024 study published in Earth’s Future examined a century of reforestation across the eastern United States and found that expanding forest cover helped offset some human-caused regional warming. In some areas, the cooling effect during summer was substantial, showing that land restoration can meaningfully influence local climate conditions.
That doesn’t mean planting trees can replace cutting greenhouse-gas emissions. But protecting existing forests and restoring degraded landscapes can provide an additional layer of defense against extreme heat, water stress, and ecosystem degradation.
Forests are more than collections of trees. They are part of Earth’s living infrastructure — regulating temperature, cycling water, protecting soil, and supporting life.
