Four students at North Carolina State University invented a nail polish in 2014 designed to detect common date r**e drugs. Called Undercover Colors, the polish changed color when it came into contact with substances like Rohypnol, Xanax and GHB, letting a woman know her drink had been tampered with by simply stirring it with her finger.

The team, made up of Stephen Gray, Ankesh Madan, Tasso Von Windheim and Tyler Confrey-Maloney, said they were inspired to create the product after each personally knowing someone who had been sexually assaulted. They wanted to shift the fear from victims to potential perpetrators, hoping the product would make people afraid to spike a drink knowing they could get caught. The invention won an entrepreneurship competition at the university and attracted $100,000 from an investor.

The idea spread quickly online and sparked global conversation about new ways to prevent drink spiking, with some praising the innovation and others arguing that prevention should not fall on potential victims.
