Monica Bellucci had her first daughter at 39, weeks shy of her 40th birthday, her second at 45, and played Lucia Sciarra in 2015's "Spectre" at 50, the oldest woman ever cast as a Bond girl.

Born September 30, 1964 in Città di Castello, Umbria, only child of a trucking-company owner and an amateur painter, she grew up in Selci-Lama and was studying law at the University of Perugia when modeling started paying the bills. In 1988 she left for Milan and signed with Elite; Dolce & Gabbana, Dior, Cartier, and Pirelli followed. "Beauty is like a horse," she has said. "You have to know how to ride it. If you count only on beauty, you don't go far."

Screen work came later: a few silent minutes as one of Dracula's brides in Coppola's "Bram Stoker's Dracula" in 1992, then the French breakthrough in Gilles Mimouni's "L'Appartement" in 1996, where she met Vincent Cassel. Tornatore's "Malèna" in 2000 made her an Italian icon and opened the door to "Tears of the Sun," the Matrix sequels, and Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ," for which she learned Aramaic to play Mary Magdalene. In between she took Gaspar Noé's "Irréversible" (2002), the most violent film she has made and, in her words, one about "the beauty and monstrosity of human beings." She has said she would not take the role now that she has daughters.

She married Cassel in Monaco in August 1999. Deva was born in Rome in September 2004, Léonie in May 2010. They separated in 2013 after 14 years and still co-parent. Later came a quieter stretch, then French sculptor Nicolas Lefebvre, and from 2023 to 2025, Tim Burton, who cast her as Delores in "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice."

The Bond call came from Sam Mendes in 2014. She assumed it was for M, Judi Dench's old chair, and told him she was 50, a woman, not a girl. Mendes said that for the first time Bond would have a story with a mature woman. She insisted on "Bond woman" rather than "Bond girl." Guinness logged her at 50 years and 2 months when filming began.

She describes herself as Italian-slow. First child near 40, second at 45, Bond at 50. She has said she waited because she worked and traveled too much, and that without the career first a part of her would have been frustrated. She has also said late motherhood was a risk, not a template: "I don't consider myself a good example, because I took enormous risks."
