Mr.Luo mentioned to me that the big difference between the practice of Guo Yunshen and Liu Qilan was:
- Guo Yunshen was well known for his half step crushing fist,
- Liu Qilan was highly regarded for his Dragon shape.
I'd heard this before, but it got me thinking over the past couple weeks because it shows a big deviation in Hebei style practice. My background comes mainly through the Liu Qilan group which includes Li Cunyi, Zhang Zhadong and so on. Guo Yunshen taught people such as Sun Lutang, Wang Xiangzhai etc... I can't comment too much on the Guo Yunshen group since I've only had limited exposure by meeting a couple masters my teacher introduced to me, but if it is true about Liu Qilan being very good at dragon it begins to make the practice of masters like Zhang Zhadong and Xue Dian make more sense since the character of the movement of their branches is extremely flexible, changing and emphasizes coiling and uncoiling as a central feature. The sense of power in this style is extremely refined and can feel like being blown over by a hurricane all the way to being struck by a bolt of lightening. Every time I have touched hands with master Yang it has been surprising, but he is a very generous teacher and has always managed to show us the point without causing grievous injury, which he is certainly more than capable of doing!!!
If I make a general appraisal of Mr.Luo's power, it is very direct, he uses force against force in a way that breaks any illusion about the soft overcoming the hard, at least in this particular context where my ability and strength are so much less than his. I did end up donating a bit of blood to his floor that day.
This is definitely one of the famous approaches of Xingyi and gave me some insight into Guo Yunshen's branch and its thinking.

The picture is of the memorial of Liu Qilan located in Shenzhou Hebei which Mr.Luo very generously took me to make an offering to this great ancestor of the art. 😀 ❤️
