According to a frequently cited analysis published a few years ago, people around the world take 93 million selfies and portraits every day. Other estimates are as high as 500 to 900 million! Unsurprisingly, 85mm lenses are among the best-selling prime lenses. And, of course, every smartphone today comes with a mandatory “Portrait” mode that mimics the bokeh of classic fast lenses. Photographing faces has simply become a defining phenomenon of our time. In the vast majority of cases, however, these are human faces, which I think is a shame. After all, animal faces have so much to offer in their diversity of colors and shapes. Let’s take a closer look.

It looks like Patrick Star has a real-life counterpart, as marine scientists have released images of a starfish closely resembling the beloved Bikini Bottom-dwelling character from the children’s cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants.
According to the researchers – a combined team of marine scientists from various Argentine institutions led by Dr. Daniel Lauretta – the image was also live-streamed at the time of creation, August 2025, to an audience of nearly 4 million viewers, “propelling the starfish to global fame.”
Since then, people commenting online have found it particularly funny that the starfish photographed by the marine researchers also appears to have the buttocks of its lookalike cartoon character.

Fall can be one of the most exciting times of year to photograph. Color is everywhere—red leaves, golden trees, winding paths, textured branches, and patches of warm afternoon light. But all that visual interest creates a surprisingly common problem:
There’s too much competing for attention.
A scene that looks beautiful to your eyes can become a cluttered photograph because your brain is very good at ignoring distractions. Your camera isn’t. It records every branch, bright leaf, patch of sky, and background object with equal enthusiasm. The solution is often simplification.

When it comes to landscape photography, choosing the right focal length is crucial for capturing breathtaking and expansive scenes. The most popular focal lengths for landscape photography typically fall within the wide-angle range, as they allow photographers to include as much of the scene as possible within the frame. Here’s a look at why certain focal lengths are favored and how they impact landscape photography.
The 24mm focal length has become the gold standard in landscape photography for several reasons, contributing to its popularity among enthusiasts and professionals alike. This preference stems from its ability to provide a wide field of view, capturing vast landscapes in a single frame without the extreme distortion often found with wider lenses. It offers a natural perspective that closely mirrors the human eye, making scenes appear expansive yet true to life.

Every photographer has a first moment when they realize their time behind the camera is something they truly care about. For some, the spark comes from a chance encounter with a unique camera in a shop window or from the skills of a beloved relative who’s also into photography. For others, it stems from a childhood TV hero, or perhaps an interest to document family life.

Foliage season is in full swing here in New England, and so far, my wide-angle lens has spent far more time in my bag than attached to my camera. My name is Jeremy, and I’m addicted to telephoto lenses for landscape photography. I’m far from the first photographer to spill ink about the virtues of longer lenses for landscape photography. But after I nearly exclusively used Sony’s new 400mm f/4.5 GM OSS lens on my Sony a7R VI during a trip to the White Mountains in New Hampshire over the weekend, I figured it was as good a time as any to share my two cents on the topic and reckon with the fact that I actually prefer longer lenses to traditional “landscape lenses.”
I Have a Confession to Make About My Landscape Photography I actually don't think I really like wide-angle lenses for landscape photography.
