Nobody tells you the hardest part about owning a beauty business isn’t the makeup.

It’s everything behind the makeup.

It’s getting clients.
It’s marketing yourself.
It’s creating content when you don’t feel like it.
It’s handling cancellations, finances, DMs, scheduling, and difficult clients.
It’s constantly learning how to run a business while still trying to perfect your craft.

Being a great makeup artist is one thing.

Building a beauty business that actually works is a completely different skill.

And that’s the part nobody prepares you for.

Researching your makeup products isn’t just about knowing which foundation gives the best finish.

It can be about client safety.

What happens when a client tells you they’re allergic to nuts, citrus, almond extract, or another ingredient and you don’t have the original box with you?

If you don’t know your products, you’re left guessing.

As a makeup artist, you should know what you’re putting on your clients’ skin. Keep your ingredient information accessible, research your products, and when you’re unsure, check before you apply.

Your artistry matters but your client’s safety matters more.

Stop thinking that reaching out means you’re “asking for a favor.”

If you’re a makeup artist trying to build your portfolio, you’re not just asking someone to help you you’re offering them value too.

Instead of saying, “I’m a new makeup artist, can you help me?”

Lead with what you can offer:

“I’m a makeup artist in Las Vegas and I’m currently building my portfolio. I’d love to collaborate with you and offer my makeup services complimentary in exchange for content.”

See the difference?

You’re not begging for an opportunity.
You’re creating a win-win collaboration.

When you lead with value, people have a reason to say yes.

Building something of your own doesn’t require having everything figured out.

It requires the courage to start before you feel ready.

You don’t need certainty — you need willingness.
You don’t need a perfect plan — you need a first step.
You don’t need everyone’s approval — you need to trust yourself.
You don’t need to be fearless — you need to act despite the fear.

Success usually isn’t one big breakthrough. It’s showing up, repeating the work, learning, adjusting, and doing it again.

There will never be a “perfect” time.

This is the time. This is the decision. And you already have what it takes.

Now use it.

Faith will ask you for things logic never will.

Logic wants proof. Faith asks you to trust.
Logic waits for certainty. Faith moves without it.
Logic asks, “What if it fails?” Faith asks, “What if it works?”
Logic keeps you comfortable. Faith asks you to take the leap.

You won’t always understand the timing.
You won’t always see how it’s going to work out.
You won’t always have the evidence before you begin.

But sometimes, the biggest steps in your life require you to move before you have all the answers.

Trust the process. Trust yourself. Trust the timing.

You don’t need to see the whole path to take the next step.

The difference between a freelancer and a founder isn’t always experience, money, or even skill.

Sometimes, it’s one decision.

The decision to stop thinking, “How do I get my next client?” and start thinking, “How do I build something that works beyond me?”

A freelancer sells their time and expertise.

A founder builds systems, creates an offer, builds a team, takes risks, and thinks beyond the next paycheck.

You don’t need a huge team or a million-dollar business to call yourself a founder.

You just need to make the decision to start building instead of just working.

That one decision can change everything.

Ever wondered how to tell if a product is water-based, oil-based, or silicone-based? Here’s a simple trick.

Place a small amount of product on a plate and tilt it.

✨ Runs down quickly? It’s usually water-based.
✨ Moves slowly? It may be oil-based.
✨ Barely moves or stays in place? It’s likely silicone- or wax-based.

Understanding your product formulas can make a huge difference in how your skincare and makeup work together. The better you know your products, the better your makeup will look and last.

Stop thinking of makeup as an “extra” expense. Start thinking about the value it adds to the experience.

On your wedding day, you’re investing in the dress, the venue, the photographer, the flowers, the jewelry… but your face is what you’ll see in every photo for years to come.

Good makeup isn’t just about looking beautiful that day. It’s about feeling confident, being camera-ready, and loving the way you look when you look back at those memories.

As a makeup artist, don’t sell yourself as someone who “just does makeup.”

You’re providing a luxury service that becomes part of someone’s most important memories.

Know the value you bring and price accordingly

Building something of your own will change the way you think about money.

You’ll learn that charging more doesn’t make you greedy. Investing in yourself isn’t reckless. And a slow month doesn’t mean your dream is failing.

You don’t need to have it all figured out before you start. You need to make the decision to take yourself, your work, and your goals seriously.

Because the goal isn’t just to make money.

It’s to build something you’re proud to keep building.

Save this for the days you need the reminder.

I remember when I was getting started with my makeup business I used to work for Macys. I started booking my first paying clients and about 4-5 months later I simply did the math.

I was able to work less time by servicing clients then working hourly for Macys, and was able to have more time to actually work on my business.

But not only that, I was able to actually do something I truly loved, and I didn’t need to go to a job and clock in anymore.

This is what made me quit Macys in 2016 and never go back to a regular job since.

Now when I get those messages from my students, and they tell me they want to quit their jobs because it doesn’t serve them anymore, I completely understand.

This is why I am launching something truly exciting for all women that are wanting to start doing makeup and getting paid for it but they are afraid to quit their jobs (and they shouldn’t right away).

And it will be exactly what these women need to start learning how to apply makeup professionally without going all in yet on makeup until they are ready for that step.
