The final lesson!
I would like to begin by saying that this is a real story—true and factual.
The purpose of sharing it is not to embellish it, but to pass on its lesson. So I will keep it direct, without unnecessary additions.
I was not there when this story took place—nor was my grandfather. It goes back many years, to a time when the founder of the house, Sayed Al Attar, had already built a well-established name from what had begun as a very small shop. His reputation was known far and wide. He was a committed man, a religious man, a scholar—and an Attar (perfumist).
Among his possessions was a very large bottle filled with some of the finest, rarest, and most expensive oils he had ever gathered in his life. Rich incense scents surrounded it. This oil was not for sale. It was never offered, never shared, and never even sampled, unlike all the other oils and perfumes. It did not even have a name or description.
His sons believed it was simply one of his many unusual ways or experiments. His life had always been filled with such mysteries.
But over time, they began to notice something strange—the level of the oil in the bottle was slowly decreasing.
At the same time, their father would disappear for a few hours every week, usually on Fridays. Sometimes, he would take a small bag with him.
This continued for years.
The sons would joke about it, calling it “the disappearing bottle.” They did not understand its purpose. They only knew it contained something extremely valuable—and that it was slowly diminishing. Sometimes the family needed money, or a product to sell, and there it was, just sitting there.
At one point, they even wondered if their father had some kind of side business. But it made no sense. Who could he be giving it to that they could not see, smell, or recognize? And why not sell it in the shop, like everything else?
When they asked him, he would simply say:
“Do not worry about it.”
The family often said he spoke in riddles—sometimes answering with quotations, and often just smiling and saying, “In time.”

I want to clarify one thing. Many people say The Perfumist creates things never before made in perfumery. The reality is, we do not.

THE TREE OF LIFE COLLECTION
Five Guardians • Five Virtues • Five Elements • One Unknown
For more than two years, The Tree of Life project carried Mr Ali Attar across Asia in search of extraordinary living monuments—ancient trees that had survived centuries of storms, conflict, human change, and time.
What began as a search for remarkable trees became something greater. Each guardian revealed a different lesson: wisdom, courage, protection, endurance, and memory.
Together, they became The Tree of Life Collection.
This collection was never conceived as five individual perfumes. It is one journey told through five guardians, created to be experienced and enjoyed in its totality—not merely as individual oils.
Most people will recognize themselves in one guardian. Some will be drawn toward wisdom. Others toward courage, protection, endurance, or memory. Yet the complete journey reveals something deeper: we are rarely only one of these things. At different moments in life, we become all five.
The collection was inspired by five extraordinary trees encountered during this journey:
• A 100-year-old Bonsai Dragon in Tokyo, Japan.
• A 400-year-old Camphor Tree in Osaka, Japan.
• A rare 200-year-old Aquilaria treasure in Cambodia.
• A 700-year-old Banyan giant in Bali.
• A 500-year-old scented Millennium Tree on Gili Island.

THE DRAGON — WISDOM • HEAVEN
Inspired by a 100-year-old Bonsai Dragon at Meiji Jingu Shrine in Tokyo, The Dragon represents patience, stillness, and wisdom shaped by time. Its twisting form resembles a dragon frozen in motion and became the beginning of the Tree of Life journey.
The fragrance imagines a hidden Japanese garden immediately after rainfall: wet earth beneath cool air, lotus floating across still ponds, white roses covered in droplets, moss-covered stone, temple clay, and vivid green grass awakening beneath a clearing sky.
Created entirely from rare natural materials with no synthetic fillers, The Dragon was developed without compromise in cost, time, effort, or experimentation.

Oakmoss. While modern alternatives may be more suitable for mass production, I still believe collectors, connoisseurs, and creators should experience real natural oils.
Rose, oud, musk, ambergris, and other rare materials are the foundations that made perfumery what it is today. Always use properly formulated products and check for skin sensitivities first.
