Starting October 17th in Michigan, you can ride the “Fall Color Tour” train aboard the Southern Michigan Railroad, rolling through the countryside between Tecumseh and Clinton during one of the prettiest times of year. For about two hours, this old-fashioned train ride carries you along Lenawee County’s historic rail line as colorful trees, quiet woods, open stretches, and the waters around Red Millpond pass beside the train. Keep watch for wildlife along the tracks and reflections of the fall leaves across the water. You can make the ride even more memorable by choosing an open-air gondola for wide-open views, a classic commuter coach, or one of the railroad’s vintage cabooses. The trip includes about 45 minutes of riding each way plus a 30-minute stop at Clinton Station. During the layover, you can sip complimentary apple c***r from Kapnick Orchards, browse the gift shop, and get a closer look at historic railroad equipment. Trains run Saturdays and Sundays in October and early November, with departures at 10:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. Adult tickets are $25, and the railroad runs rain or shine.

I have never liked the idea that we must love ourselves before anyone else can love us. It’s one of those statements that sounds wise at first, until you sit with it for a moment and realize how absurdly it flattens the human experience.

As if grief, depression, trauma, shame, confusion—any of the very real states people move through—are simply personal failures to be corrected before we are allowed care.

People deserve love while they are in the middle of it. Not after they’ve “fixed” themselves. Not after they’ve reached some imaginary threshold of self-approval. Sometimes being loved well is part of how we learn that love can even be safe.

Self-love matters, yes—but it should never be turned into a gate people have to unlock before they are considered worthy of kindness.
