🫘 AGING GRACEFULLY CHALLENGE — WEEK 4: BEANS & LENTILS 🫘

This week, we’re celebrating one of the most humble and powerful foods for healthy aging:

BEANS!

Beans and lentils may not seem glamorous, but when it comes to longevity, they are nutritional superstars.

They’re packed with fiber, plant protein, resistant starch, vitamins, minerals, and polyphenols—a combination that supports many of the systems we want to protect as we age.

🫘 Fiber — nourishes your gut microbiome and supports regularity
šŸ’Ŗ Plant protein — helps support muscle maintenance as we age
🩸 Fiber + resistant starch — help support healthy blood sugar
ā¤ļø Soluble fiber —help support healthy cholesterol levels
🌱 Polyphenols — provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits
🧠 Gut–brain connection — the beneficial bacteria in your gut produce compounds called short-chain fatty acids that communicate with the brain and help support brain health, cognition, and a healthy inflammatory response

This last one might be my favorite reasons to eat more beans:

A healthy gut isn’t just about digestion. It’s connected to a healthy brain. šŸ§ šŸ’š

The gut and brain are constantly communicating through the gut–brain axis. By feeding the beneficial bacteria in our microbiome with fiber-rich foods like beans and lentils, we’re also creating an environment that may support long-term cognitive health.

And here’s something I LOVE:

Beans are a common food in many of the world’s longest-lived populations. They aren’t a trendy superfood. They’ve simply been nourishing people for generations.

✨ THIS WEEK’S CHALLENGE:

Eat ½–1 cup of beans or lentils every day for 7 days.

Try switching it up!

🫘 Black beans
🫘 Chickpeas
🫘 Lentils
🫘 Cannellini beans
🫘 Kidney beans
🫘 Split peas
🫘 Edamame

Add them to salads, soups, grain bowls, tacos, curries—or simply toss some chickpeas or beans into whatever you’re already eating.

Remember: healthy aging isn’t about eating perfectly. It’s about consistently giving your body what it needs to thrive.

🌱 Small choices. Every day. A lifetime of benefits.

Who’s joining me for Week 4? 🫘
Tell me: what’s your favorite way to eat beans?

Ellen Langer’s fascinating ā€œCounterclockwiseā€ study:

Langer placed older men in an environment designed to recreate the world of their younger years—complete with music, magazines, television, and conversations from that time. After just one week, measurable changes were seen in their physical functioning and even in how they appeared.

The study has been debated and has limitations, but Langer’s larger message is fascinating:

How we think about aging may influence how we experience aging.

Our minds and bodies aren’t as separate as we sometimes imagine.

And maybe that’s why that old song on the StairMaster did more than bring back a memory.

It reminded my body of a younger me.

So today, I’m thinking…

What if we intentionally gave ourselves more opportunities to feel young—not by denying our age, but by reconnecting with the energy, curiosity, playfulness, confidence, and possibility we had along the way?

Aging Gracefully isn’t about trying to turn back the clock— It’s about remembering that the clock doesn’t get to define everything about how we feel.

šŸŽ¶ What song instantly takes you back to a younger version of yourself?

Can you hear the mountain stream?

Eckhart Tolle tells a beautiful Zen story in ā€œA New Earthā€ about a student who asks a Zen master how to enter Zen.

The master simply asks, ā€œCan you hear the mountain stream?ā€

The student listens but can’t hear it. His mind is too busy trying to understand.

So he becomes quiet.

He stops thinking.

And suddenly, beneath all the other sounds, he hears the faint sound of the stream.

The master says:

ā€œEnter Zen from there.ā€

Isn’t this what we often do?

We think about being present.
We read about mindfulness.
We try to quiet our minds.

And meanwhile, we miss the moment that’s actually happening.

Mindfulness isn’t about having a perfectly quiet mind. It’s about noticing when we’ve wandered—and gently returning.

Whatever is happening right now is the doorway.

Anxious? Enter from there.
Distracted? Enter from there.
Joyful? Enter from there.

In the Aging Gracefully program, we’ll practice this—learning how to quiet the noise, become more present, and actually experience our lives rather than constantly thinking about them.

Because this moment will never happen again.

Can you hear the mountain stream?

šŸ„ Aging Gracefully Challenge –
Week 3: Mighty Mushrooms šŸ„

When it comes to aging well, mushrooms deserve a standing ovation.

Why?

Because they contain a compound called ergothioneine—a powerful antioxidant and amino acid that our bodies cannot make on their own. Scientists have even nicknamed it the ā€œlongevity nutrientā€ because of its potential role in protecting our cells from oxidative stress, supporting healthy aging, and preserving brain function.

Want the biggest ergothioneine boost? šŸ† Porcini and Oyster mushrooms are among the richest dietary sources, followed by maitake, king oyster, shiitake, and cremini mushrooms. The good news? Even everyday white button mushrooms contain this remarkable nutrient.

Mushrooms also provide:
šŸ„ Beta-glucans to support a healthy immune system
🧠 Nutrients that help support memory and cognitive health
ā¤ļø Compounds that help reduce inflammation and support heart health
šŸ’Ŗ B vitamins, selenium, copper, and potassium to help fuel healthy cells

✨ This Week’s Challenge:
Eat ½ to 1 cup of mushrooms every day for the next 7 days.

Try to enjoy a variety:
šŸ„ Porcini/Oyster (highest in ergothioneine!)
šŸ„ Maitake
šŸ„ Shiitake
šŸ„ Cremini
šŸ„ Portobello
šŸ„ Lion’s Mane (known for its unique compounds that support brain health)

SautƩ them with garlic and herbs, add them to soups, stir-fries, salads, grain bowls, tacos, or blend them into pasta sauces for an extra boost of nutrition.

🌱 Small choices. Every day. A lifetime of benefits.
Your future self is being nourished by the choices you make today.šŸ’š

🄬 Improve insulin sensitivity
✨ Support metabolic flexibility (your body’s ability to switch between burning glucose and fat)
šŸ’š Reduce markers of oxidative stress and inflammation
🧠 Activate important cellular stress-response pathways linked with healthy aging, including AMPK and sirtuins. 🧹 Promote autophagy, or cell turnover (cellular repair and recycle)

But…a cleanse isn’t just physical.

It’s a chance to slow down.
To reconnect.
To become more intentional with every sip, every breath, and every choice.

šŸ My 3-Day Organic Juice Cleanse includes fresh, cold-pressed juices made with organic produce and crafted to support your body with every jar.

How are you tending your inner garden?

As we age, it’s easy to focus on what is changing on the outside—the wrinkles, the gray hair, the slower pace of the body. But what if our greatest growth was never meant to happen outwardly? What if the most beautiful part of aging is tending to our inner garden?

A garden doesn’t become beautiful by accident. It requires care, attention, and the willingness to gently pull the weeds while nurturing what we want to grow.

Our inner garden is no different.

Every day we have a choice: Will we water gratitude or resentment? Compassion or judgment? Peace or worry?

The outer garden will eventually fade with the seasons, but the inner garden has the potential to become more vibrant with time. As the body changes, wisdom can deepen. As our pace slows, presence can grow. As we let go of what no longer serves us, qualities like kindness, patience, and love can bloom more fully than ever before.

So today, ask yourself: What am I watering?

Because wherever our attention goes, that is what grows.

May we spend a little less time worrying about the garden everyone else can see, and a little more time tending the one that nourishes our soul.

The top reason to join the Aging Gracefully Program isn’t that it’s a 3-month journey.

It isn’t the personalized 1-on-1 coaching.

It isn’t even the serene 3-day juice retreat that brings everything together.

✨ It’s the community.

Because aging was never meant to be done alone.

Somewhere along the way, many of us begin to believe we’re the only ones navigating changing bodies, shifting identities, new health concerns, or wondering what this next chapter is supposed to look like.

You’re not.

Imagine being surrounded by a small circle of people who truly understand, who celebrate your victories, support you through challenges, laugh with you, learn beside you, and remind you that this season of life is about becoming more of who you really are.

Research consistently shows that meaningful social connection is one of the strongest predictors of healthy aging, longevity, and emotional well-being. It lowers stress, supports cognitive health, and even improves physical health.

When you join the Aging Gracefully Program, you’re not just joining a class.

You’re finding your people.

The education, the coaching, the movement, the nutrition, the spiritual practices, and the retreat are all incredibly valuable.

But the friendships you build may be the most life-changing part of all.

Because the journey becomes lighter when we walk it together. šŸ’›

šŸ“ Aging Gracefully Challenge – Week 2: Berries 🫐

Berries are packed with compounds called anthocyanins—the pigments that give blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries their vibrant colors. These plant compounds help protect our cells from oxidative stress, reduce inflammation, and support healthy aging from the inside out.

Research suggests that eating berries regularly may:

🫐 Improve memory and cognitive function
ā¤ļø Support heart health and healthy blood vessels
✨ Protect the skin by reducing oxidative damage that contributes to wrinkles
🩸 Help improve insulin sensitivity and blood sugar regulation
🧠 Nourish the brain and may even slow age-related cognitive decline

✨ This Week’s Challenge:
Enjoy 1 cup of berries every day for 7 days.
Fresh or frozen both count!

Ideas:
• Add blueberries to your morning oatmeal.
• Blend raspberries into a smoothie.
• Top plant-based yogurt with strawberries and walnuts.
• Toss blackberries into a salad with leafy greens.
• Eat them straight from the bowl—they’re nature’s candy.

Every colorful bite is an investment in your future self.

ā€œThe food you eat today is building the body you’ll live in tomorrow.ā€
