Learn how Rachel Myllymaki achieves smooth, fluid and fast turns—a style that keeps her horses winning at all levels of barrel racing with the "Three Rs."

Rate and roundness go hand in hand for Myllymaki, all part of the preparation as the horse comes into the turn. She prefers to pick up on the inside rein to lift the shoulder and get the roundness needed in the horse’s body, and then allow the horse to carry her through the turn unless conditions warrant more push. She’ll also apply a little pressure with her inside foot to hold the body position. Adjusting your horse’s body position leads into the third R in Myllymaki’s equation: read your horse.
