TAKE INITIATIVE. BE PROACTIVE.

Are you actually ready to change—or are you just looking for someone to make the symptoms go away?

Pain. Tightness. Weakness. Inflammation. Limited mobility.

Those are the things you feel. But simply reducing a symptom doesn’t necessarily change what contributed to it in the first place.

At Human Function and Performance, we believe the best outcomes happen when you become an active participant in the process.

Physical therapy isn’t something that is simply done to you.

Training isn’t a collection of exercises you check off.

Recovery isn’t a substitute for changing the behaviors that continually put you back in the same place.

Real progress requires ownership.

Be coachable.
Be curious.
Stay consistent.
Ask questions.
Do the work outside the session.
And be willing to change what isn’t working.

Our job is to assess, educate, guide, and give you the tools.

Your job is to take those tools and use them.

Because feeling better is important—but learning how to move better, function better, and take greater control of your health is what creates lasting change.

Don’t wait until something hurts to start taking care of it.

Take initiative. Be proactive.

Relief is the starting point. Function is the goal.

Mobility Isn’t Just About How Far You Can Stretch. It’s About What Your Body Can Access.

Sometimes the difference between feeling restricted and finding movement is simply creating the right position.

Using blocks, changes in stance, hand position, or different points of support can alter the demands placed on the body and give the hips, pelvis, spine, and shoulders an opportunity to explore movement differently.

The goal isn’t to force yourself deeper into a stretch.

It’s to create an environment where the body can access motion, control it, and eventually use it without assistance.

At HFP, we can manipulate:

Position — where the body starts
Support — how much stability the body is given
Intention — where we want the movement to occur
Load — how much demand we place on the system

Sometimes adding support actually allows us to find more movement, not less.

Create the position. Find the movement. Build the control. Then take the support away.

Grateful for the people, the conversations, and the connections.

There’s something powerful about bringing together a room full of people who show up with authenticity, gratitude, curiosity, and a genuine desire to connect.

A huge thank you to Dr. Fab and Karen for curating and hosting such an exceptional experience. The environment you created wasn’t simply about the event itself—it was about the people, the energy, and the meaningful conversations that came from bringing the right group together.

Some of the best opportunities for growth come from stepping outside of our normal routines, exchanging ideas, learning from others, and building genuine relationships.

Leaving this weekend inspired, grateful, and energized by the people I had the opportunity to meet and spend time with.

The right people in the right room can create something special.

Same Exercise. Different Position. Completely Different Demand.

By elevating the feet, we change the relationship between the body and the ground—shifting load, changing joint angles, and increasing the demands placed on the shoulders, scapula, trunk, and entire kinetic chain.

At HFP, we look beyond the name of an exercise and ask:

What position is the body in?
Where is the load going?
What needs to stabilize?
What movement or adaptation are we trying to create?

Small changes in position can completely change the purpose of an exercise.

That’s why progression isn’t always about adding more weight. Sometimes it’s changing the angle, leverage, stability, speed, or direction of movement to give the body a different challenge.

Position creates the environment.
Intention creates the movement.
Load creates the adaptation.

Train the exercise—but understand the why behind it.

What if your body CAN get there—it just needs help finding the position?

Mobility isn’t always about stretching harder or forcing more range. Sometimes the key is changing the environment around the movement.

TRX straps and resistance bands aren’t just tools for adding resistance. They can help us create a specific body position that allows a joint to access movement differently.

By changing where the body is positioned relative to the anchor point, we can influence:

* Joint angles
* Direction of force
* Weight distribution
* Stability and support
* How much a region is loaded or unloaded
* Which areas are encouraged to move

The TRX can provide just enough support to allow the body to explore an angle or position that may be difficult to access independently.

Sometimes the mobility is there—the body simply needs the right position, support, and intention to access it.

At HFP, exercise selection isn’t simply about choosing an exercise.

It’s about manipulating position, intention, and resistance to create the movement response we’re looking for.

Change the position. Change the input. Change the movement.

Shoulder Pain Isn’t Always Just a Shoulder Problem

Your shoulder doesn’t move independently from the rest of your body.

The position of the rib cage and thoracic spine creates the foundation that the shoulder blade and shoulder move on. If that foundation changes, shoulder mechanics can change with it.

Within the HFP Pattern, we often see predictable differences from one side of the body to the other. Rib cage position, rotation, and compression can influence scapular position and ultimately how much freedom the shoulder has to move.

So when someone has shoulder pain or limited mobility, simply stretching or strengthening the shoulder may not address the entire problem.

Sometimes we need to ask:

Where is the rib cage positioned?
Can the rib cage move?
Can the scapula move around it?
And then—can the shoulder move freely on top of that foundation?

By improving rib cage alignment and restoring movement through the system, we can create a better environment for the shoulder to move, load, and produce force.

Position → Mobility → Control → Performance

Don’t just chase the painful shoulder. Understand what the shoulder is moving on.

Fat vs. Muscle: What Is Your Body Telling You?

Building muscle and carrying excess body fat can both change how the body feels—but in very different ways.

As you build muscle and challenge your body, you may experience temporary soreness, stiffness, fatigue, or inflammation. These can be normal responses to training and adaptation, especially when followed by appropriate movement, recovery, nutrition, and rest.

Excess body fat, particularly when accompanied by poor metabolic health, can contribute to chronic low-grade inflammation and increase the risk of metabolic and cardiovascular disease over time.

The important part is understanding the difference between a body that is adapting to a healthy stress and one signaling that something needs attention.

Listen to the signals. Understand your current state. Then use movement, recovery, and lifestyle strategies to help your body function better.

The goal isn’t simply how your body looks. It’s how well your body functions.

Can Your Rib Cage Move Without Your Hips Moving With It?

Good movement isn’t just about how much mobility you have. It’s also about where that movement is coming from.

The rib cage and thoracic spine need the ability to rotate, side bend, flex, and extend while the pelvis and hips provide stability and control underneath.

When those regions can’t separate, the body often moves everything together. Instead of creating motion through the rib cage, you may compensate by rotating the pelvis, shifting through the hips, or changing your lower-body position.

That’s why we sometimes need to stabilize one region to expose and train movement in another.

Can you keep the pelvis and hips controlled while allowing the rib cage to move independently?

Then can you reconnect those pieces when it’s time to walk, run, rotate, lift, or perform?

Separate the movement. Control the movement. Then integrate the movement.

That’s how mobility becomes usable movement.
