Week one. The alarm goes at six and the hair is the last thing anybody thought about.

By 6:41 you already late. By 6:38 the comb reach halfway and stop. By 6:20 you start on hair that's bone dry, and by then the morning was already gone.

Nobody knew about the bags.

They were not on the flyer and they were not in the post. That was on purpose. There was a limited number, and they were meant for people from the area, not for people who saw something online and drove in.

So we set up inside K.A.F. Enterprises in Princes Town on Friday, and the first ones through the door got one. A schoolbag, packed and ready, with a little something from us clipped on the front.

You know how this time of year does go. Books, shoes, uniform, and by the time you reach the end of the list the money done. Hair care is always last on the list and first to finish.

Independence Day, and we have been here for more than half of it.

Trinidad and Tobago became independent in 1962, sixty-four years ago today. Summit Cosmetics started in Laventille in 1987. For more than half of this country's independent life, we have been mixing, filling and labelling bottles right here for Caribbean hair.
