Let’s talk DARK LIPS! Tattooing melanin-rich lips is a technique all of its own. You can’t tattoo them the same way you do a lip that doesn’t have dark areas. That’s because darker lips are hyper-pigmented, and if you don’t neutralize them first, you risk making the lips even darker. In all cosmetic tattooing, we use something called the Fitzpatrick scale. The fitz scale covers 6 skin tones, 1-3 being fair to olive skinned and 4-6 being tan to dark skinned. Those who fall between 4-6 often have melanin rich lips. In order to work on these lips we have to neutralize the darker color with either orange or yellow depending on whether they have blue or purple undertones. It’s science and color theory to the max! Once the lips have been neutralized, aka turned to a soft and even toned pink/peach color, we can then go in and tattoo the target color successfully, or leave them the new neutralized color. It’s important to go to someone with color theory and neutralizing knowledge in order to get the right results! With this beautiful lady, we neutralized her lips with a soft orange, which will heal to a lovely lighter more even color. Usually this process takes 2-3 sessions so stay tuned for the healed afters! 😍😍

I’m Kat, the owner and artist behind The Blush House! I’m 35 years old, originally from Utah, but these days I call Chicago home. I’ve been tattooing for 3 years now and prior to that had a 15 year long career in Equestrian Sports (horse girl here 💁🏻‍♀️🦄)

Outside of the studio- I’m obsessed with my rescue dog Hughie (seriously, I’d take a bullet for him 🐶), A24 movies, happy hours, horror & true crime everything, outdoor adventures, trying every restaurant Chicago has to offer, thrifting and everything girly 💄

One thing that’s always been at the heart of what I do is helping women feel confident, empowered, and comfortable in their own skin. It’s a big part of why I fell in love with this industry in the first place. Whether it’s lip blush, scar camouflage, or ar**la tattoos- being able to make a positive impact on someone’s life is something I’ll never take for granted.

Something a lot of people don’t know about me is that I am also a R**e Crisis Counselor and volunteer as a medical advocate for sexual assault survivors in 12 different emergency rooms around Chicago. Supporting people through difficult moments and helping them reclaim confidence and healing is something I’m incredibly passionate about both inside and outside of my work.
