💈 WORLD BARBER DAY — CELEBRATING CHELSEA’S BARBERS 💈
Today, the Chelsea Police Department is proud to recognize the talented barbers and barbershops that are part of the fabric of our community.
A neighborhood barbershop has always been about more than a haircut. It is a place for conversation, friendship, laughter, mentorship and connection. Today we celebrate the men and women carrying on that tradition throughout Chelsea and encourage our community to support local, walk in, shop Chelsea and celebrate the craft.
As we recognize today’s barbers, we also remember some of the Chelsea barbers who helped build that tradition before them.
Richard “Sonny” Lepore (1933–2023) was a third-generation Chelsea barber who spent an incredible 70 years behind the chair. His grandfather, Serafino Lepore, established the Modern Barber Shop on Broadway. Sonny’s father, Melinto “Morley” Lepore, later operated it as Morley’s Barber Shop, where father and son worked together. The shop became such a fixture in Chelsea that the Chelsea Record described it as a Chelsea institution. Sonny never formally retired and continued cutting hair from his home barbershop into his 90th year.
We also remember Adolfo “Fito” Ramirez (1935–2010), another longtime Chelsea barber. Fito began cutting hair at Frank’s Barber Shop on Fifth Street after coming to Chelsea in the late 1960s. He eventually acquired the business, moved it to Broadway and operated the well-known Frank and Fito’s Barber Shop for many years.
Their stories remind us that Chelsea’s barbershops have been gathering places for generations. Today’s barbers continue that legacy every time they open their doors, welcome a neighbor into the chair and help create the relationships that make a community feel like home.
To all of Chelsea’s barbers — past and present — thank you for your craft, your conversations, your entrepreneurship and your commitment to our community.
💈 Happy World Barber Day from the Chelsea Police Department!

14 years ago. Way before I thought of cutting hair. Before I really understood the impact patience had on families of kids on the spectrum. My dad and step mom trusted me to cut my brothers hair. The sensory sensitivies made it tough.Over time it thankfully got easy. The trust was built.
