Duracell’s new Global Innovation Center for R&D at Science Square Labs in Atlanta is officially complete!

This project represents a major investment in the future of battery innovation. Spanning approximately 83,000 square feet across four floors, the facility brings together advanced laboratories, testing environments, and collaborative workplace settings.

The design takes inspiration from Duracell’s iconic battery, translating its recognizable form and signature colors into a distinctive workplace experience. Warm, rich tones and subtle brand expressions are woven throughout the space. Outdoor amenities, including the adjacent green roof and terraces, along with biophilic elements and hospitality-inspired gathering areas, create an environment centered on employee well-being.

Congratulations to the project team, Samantha Melcher, Gregory Levy, Mark Joyner, Fiorella Caras, and Nicole Sheffield. Thank you to Duracell for trusting us to bring this vision to life!

University of Georgia’s new Track & Field Complex is raising the bar for collegiate track and field venues.

Spanning 37 acres, the complex draws inspiration from the motion and precision inherent to the sport, translating speed and movement into a cohesive architectural language through sweeping forms, dynamic circulation, and a dramatic grandstand canopy.

The project recently received a Jury Award in the Architecture and Interior Design category at the 2026 AIA Aspire Design Awards, a regional program recognizing design excellence across the southeastern United States. Thank you to everyone who helped bring this project to life!

Kaiser Borsari Hall at Western Washington University has set a new standard for sustainable higher education architecture. Steeped in the Pacific Northwest context, the building is made almost entirely of wood, including a mass timber structure and shou sugi ban facade. The biogenic materials and proximity to a forest preserve connect the building to nature, creating a biophilic learning environment shaped by research into neurodiversity.

Certified Zero Energy and Zero Carbon through the International Living Future Institute, the building serves as a living lab where sustainability is made visible and experiential—giving students the opportunity to learn from the architecture itself and helping the university rethink how it designs infrastructure across campus.

In this installment of , Ryan Bussard and Devin Kleiner of our Seattle studio explore how Kaiser Borsari Hall is showing what’s possible when sustainability becomes part of the learning experience. What does it look like when design puts people, community, and well-being at the center?

The American Society of Interior Designers/ASID’s National Awards recognize projects that advance health and well-being, foster more inclusive communities, and respond to environmental challenges. This year, we’re proud to have three of our projects recognized across two FOCUS categories.

𝘍𝘖𝘊𝘜𝘚 𝘋𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘺: 𝘓𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘦 𝘍𝘪𝘳𝘮 𝘔𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘵 𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵
The Center provides customized, technology-rich learning environments for communication arts and humanities disciplines. Murals and gathering spaces celebrate Bowie State’s history as a diverse institution while honoring Dr. King’s ideals of empowerment, justice, equity, love, and community.

We’re thrilled to celebrate the official opening of the MacIsaac Health Building at University of British Columbia!

Designed by our Vancouver studio and Danish studio (Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects), UBC’s first CAGBC Zero Carbon Building is an exemplary model of health, bringing together the MacIsaac School of Nursing, the School of Kinesiology, UBC Student Health Services, a teaching clinic, and other academic and research functions.

The architecture is inspired by both the natural Pacific Northwest setting and the immediate context of the surrounding campus. The use of local wood is celebrated through an expressed timber structure throughout the building’s public spaces, centered around a skylit atrium that serves as its vibrant social heart.

Learn how the design creates a new campus arrival experience while advancing UBC’s priorities for sustainability, Musqueam (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm) engagement, and student health and well-being: https://perkinswill.com/news/ubc-macisaac-health-building-complete/

Ten years ago, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture opened its doors to the public. Since then, it has welcomed millions of visitors, touched countless lives, and become a place where generations can come together to share, celebrate, and reflect on African American history and culture.

That story extends beyond the museum’s exhibits, stories, and art—it’s embedded in the architecture itself. The building’s distinctive form was inspired by the Yoruba caryatid, a traditional West African column, while the pattern cast into the corona panels alludes to the ornate ironwork found throughout southern cities, much of it designed and fabricated by African American craftspeople. From its form to its details, the architecture is deeply rooted in heritage.

“Ten years on, the enduring power of this museum is the community it serves and reflects,” says Zena Howard, our Firmwide Cultural and Civic Practice Leader. “Generations carried the dream long before there was a building, and today that legacy lives through the partnership between the Smithsonian and the people whose stories give this place meaning. The museum continues to deepen our understanding of the American story with every person who walks through its doors.”

: Regenerative Design.

What if buildings could do more than reduce their impact—and actively help restore the ecosystems and communities around them?

Regenerative design looks beyond minimizing environmental impact to create places that give back to their surroundings. This can mean restoring biodiversity, sequestering carbon, designing systems that restore and reuse water, using circular materials, generating more energy than a building consumes, and creating spaces that support human health, resilience, and connection.

We see regeneration as an ongoing process—one that asks us to continually rethink how our work can contribute to a healthier, more resilient future. Swipe to explore some of the projects putting regenerative design into practice.

Featured Projects:
1. CoverMyMeds Corporate Headquarters in Columbus, Ohio
2. Henrico County Center for Environmental Studies and Sustainability in Richmond, Virginia
3. Western Washington University, Kaiser Borsari Hall in Bellingham, Washington

Designed as a “lantern in the woodlands,” the RAD Center welcomes University of Houston students into a glowing gathering space nestled among the trees.

As the first mass timber building on campus, this groundbreaking structure replaces an underground, flood-prone dining facility that was severely damaged during Hurricane Harvey. The RAD Center serves as a “third place” beyond home and the classroom, giving students a daylit space to gather, dine, study, and connect.

Thank you to Pooja Desai for featuring the project in Texas Society of Architects/AIA. Read the full story here: https://magazine.texasarchitects.org/2026/07/28/higher-ground/
