Sometimes a haircut isn’t just a haircut.
My nephew had hair down his back for most of his life. Everyone admired it. Everyone identified him by it. But underneath all of that… he had been wanting to cut it for years.
When he finally did, the reactions around him were big. Instead of treating the moment like something was “wrong,” I saw it for what it really was:
A young person trying to step into himself.
Not everyone understands the pressure of carrying an identity that was chosen for you.
Not everyone understands how much bravery it takes to finally say:
“This is how I want to look. This is who I want to be.”
So this wasn’t about cutting all his hair off.
It was about helping him transition with care, confidence, and intention.
And honestly… seeing his face fully visible, his energy lighter, and a new version of him beginning to emerge almost brought me to tears.
Still beautiful curls.
Still healthy hair.
Just finally starting to feel like his.

It was an honor to be apart of the Mother’s Day Self Care Expo and use my skills to pour back into women within the community. As I always say, a haircut is more than just a haircut. Sometimes it’s confidence, release, restoration, softness or simply a moment to feel cared for. I’m truly grateful to have shared space with so many amazing women, professionals and community leaders dedicated to creating experiences rooted in care & support.
