Growing up Hatian American in a single-parent home wasn’t easy; and when I unexpectedly lost my Mother in a car crash at the age of 12, life got a whole lot harder. I couldn’t understand how fate had left my siblings and me abandoned with (what seemed like) no one to love us. It made me angry. Like really REALLY angry. I thought, ‘We’re already struggling... and now this! How?! Why?!’ For me, the only way to survive the pain was to simply bulldoze through it. And the only way through it was with a rock hard exterior to prevent the anger from swallowing me whole. Or... so I thought.

It wasn’t until college that I was finally given the tools to Rethink Soft. My college mentor allowed me to release my pain and instead of getting into an all out brawl with it everytime time it reared its ugly head. Because of her kindness, I found comfort in softness and I was able to break free of the angry shell I had created around myself.

The truth is, “soft” has a bad reputation and is often associated with being “weak.” Unfortunately, not everyone has a mentor to help debunk the myths about the importance of being soft and in turn more kind. ​ ​
