How Alcohol Kills Your Muscle Growth and Fat Loss
Your liver has one job when alcohol enters your bloodstream, and everything else waits.
To understand why alcohol does what it does to your body composition, you need to understand how your body decides what to burn for fuel, and the answer is that it does not really decide, it follows a strict hierarchy based on what it can and cannot store.
Carbohydrates can be stored as glycogen. Fat can be stored in adipose tissue. Protein can be broken down and repurposed. But alcohol, specifically something called ethanol, which is the compound in every alcoholic drink that makes you drunk, cannot be stored anywhere in the body. Your body has no ethanol depot. It cannot set ethanol aside and come back to it later.
So when ethanol enters your bloodstream, your liver treats it as an emergency. The entire metabolic system shifts to clearing the poison first, which means everything else pauses. That is not a metaphor.
A 1988 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition measured what actually happens to your metabolism in the hours after drinking. Researchers tracked carbohydrate oxidation, fat oxidation, and protein oxidation while subjects consumed ethanol. All three dropped significantly. Your body did not selectively slow one fuel source. It effectively put the brakes on burning any of them while it worked to clear the alcohol.
The fat burning number is the one that matters most for body composition. A 1999 study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation measured whole-body lipid oxidation after acute alcohol consumption and found it was suppressed by approximately 73 percent. Nearly three quarters of your fat burning capacity, gone, for the duration of the time your liver is processing the alcohol in your system.
That is the mechanism people miss when they think about alcohol and fat loss. They tend to think about alcohol calories adding on top of everything else, which is true, but the deeper problem is that alcohol is not just adding fuel to the fire, it is putting the fire mostly out.
Here is how to think about it. Imagine your metabolism as a factory with multiple production lines running at once. Under normal circumstances, you have a fat burning line, a glucose burning line, and a protein metabolism line all operating simultaneously. When alcohol arrives, it does not add a new line. It essentially halts the other lines and forces every available worker to process the alcohol first. The factory is still running. It is just running almost entirely on the alcohol task.
This is what researchers call metabolic priority, which means the order in which your body chooses to process different substrates based on urgency and storage capacity. Alcohol sits at the top of that hierarchy because it has nowhere to go. It has to be dealt with now.
Now, the fat in your last meal, the glycogen in your muscles, the dietary protein you consumed, all of it is still there waiting. And while the alcohol is being cleared, none of it is being meaningfully oxidized. That means anything in your system that would have been burned as fuel is now a candidate for storage.
And here is where the caloric math becomes a real problem. When you drink, you are almost certainly eating at the same time, or shortly before or after. That food does not disappear. Its calories are still in the system. But the processing priority has shifted entirely to alcohol, so those calories sit. And if the total intake for the day exceeds what your body needs, and the fat burning system is mostly offline, there is no mechanism left to prevent fat storage. One hundred percent of the surplus goes to fat in that scenario because fat burning, the normal process that would have offset some of that surplus, is largely shut down.
The muscle side of this is equally worth understanding. A 2014 study published in PLoS ONE looked at what happens to muscle protein synthesis after exercise when subjects consumed alcohol. Participants performed a bout of concurrent training, meaning both resistance and endurance work, and then consumed either protein alone or protein combined with alcohol. Even when protein intake was optimal, alcohol consumption reduced maximal rates of myofibrillar protein synthesis, which is the process by which your muscle fibers are actually rebuilt and grown after training, by a meaningful amount compared to protein alone.
This matters because the post-exercise window is when your muscles are most responsive to rebuilding signals. Training creates the stimulus. Protein provides the raw material. But the actual construction work, the synthesis of new muscle proteins into the fiber structure, requires metabolic conditions that alcohol disrupts. So you can train, you can eat your protein, and still get a fraction of the adaptation you would have gotten otherwise because the building process itself is impaired.
If you are trying to make a practical decision based on this, the structure of the problem is more important than any specific rule. The issue is not one drink. The issue is that any amount of alcohol triggers the metabolic priority shift, and the degree of damage scales with how much you drink and what you are eating around it. Drinking on an empty stomach at least reduces the pile of unburned fuel waiting to be stored. Drinking in a caloric surplus while suppressing 73 percent of your fat oxidation is the worst-case version of the scenario.
The part that usually gets left out of the conversation about alcohol and body composition is that the calories in the alcohol are almost beside the point. A glass of wine has around 120 calories. That is not enough by itself to derail anything. What derails things is that for the several hours your liver spends clearing that alcohol, the rest of your metabolic machinery is running at a fraction of its normal capacity, and anything you have eaten is waiting in a system that cannot fully process it.
The alcohol does not make you fat by adding to your plate. It makes you fat by pausing the machinery that would have kept things in balance.
