I got caught up with accolades, trophies and the money for a long time. I attached my self-worth to that a lot. When my dad passed away from stage 4 pancreatic cancer 4 years ago, all of that came to a screeching vault. I was sitting at the chapel where we had his funeral services and remember looking out at the crowd. I realized then that I needed to get back to living in alignment with what really mattered in life.

Since then, I’ve been doing my best to do that.

Society often defines a good life by promotions, titles, and awards. However, reaching these milestones does not automatically create inner peace.

Happiness happens when your daily actions match what you truly care about, such as creativity, family, or kindness. True self-worth means knowing you are valuable just as you are, without needing a crowd to approve.

Ready for story time? About two years ago, I had built an entire online platform with courses, modules, two hardcopy books and training curriculum for realtors worldwide. Had a business partner that for one reason or another didn’t make sense anymore to be together. So I decided to walk away, and I gave him everything that I had created.

I remember my wife told me that I could either dwell on what once was or I could look forward, re-create it all, and focus on taking steps towards the future.

I’m so glad she encouraged me to do that. Because energy flows where attention goes. Within four months, I had re-created everything. I felt like Steve Jobs when he was let go from Apple and then came back. I was a creative genius and so it makes sense that I was able to re-create it all that fast. But I couldn’t have done that if I dwelt all my time and energy on the past.

What happened yesterday cannot be changed, fixed, or rewritten. The past already served its purpose by teaching you what you needed to know. Spending time wishing things were different only steals the energy you need for today.

Move forward. Don’t look back.
