🚨 THE BODA BODA AND CAR DEBT TRAP: A CALL FOR JUSTICE 🚨

I have watched silently. But silence is complicity.

MOGO Uganda and other Tier 4 microfinance lenders are not offering a lifeline they are setting a trap. A rider gets a UGX 2M bike, repays UGX 1.5M, and misses ONE WEEK of payments. What happens?

No negotiation.
No restructuring.
The bike is seized at midnight. It's sold to another victim. Your money is kept. Your bike is gone.

This isn't capitalism. This is STRUCTURAL THEFT.

The Constitution of Uganda guarantees the right to work (Article 40) and protection from deprivation of property (Article 26) . But these rights mean nothing when a rider cannot afford a lawyer to challenge a 145% APR. The law is on the books, but the practice on the ground is exploitation .

To every boda rider in Kampala, Jinja, and Mbarara:

You are not a "defaulter." You are a TARGET. These companies have built their profit model on your repossession. They expect 40% of you to fail. That is not a loan; it’s a lottery where you lose your bike, your money, and your livelihood.

I CALL UPON:

Office of The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) – To investigate predatory lending as a form of economic sabotage, as defined under Ugandan law .

The Uganda Law Society – To provide legal aid and pro-bono support to riders fighting illegal repossession and exploitation.

The Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development & Uganda Microfinance Regulatory Authority (UMRA) – To enforce the Tier 4 Microfinance Institutions Act, implement interest rate caps, and stop the predatory practices that are crippling the boda sector .

Parliament of Uganda – To pass legislation that caps repossession rates and protects the assets of the working poor. This is a matter of economic justice .
