🔴 BREAKING: Riek Machar Requests Audio and Video Recording of His Court Testimony

Suspended First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar has asked the South Sudan Special Court to allow his testimony to be recorded in both audio and video, arguing that the proceedings should be preserved due to the country's uncertain political and security situation.

Appearing before the three-judge panel during the ongoing trial at Freedom Hall in Juba, Machar said a digital record would preserve what he described as the truth of the case for the South Sudanese people, serve as a historical record, and provide reference material for future courts, researchers, and academic institutions.

Machar also urged the judiciary to embrace technology, noting that UNMISS had donated computers to support the digitization of South Sudan's justice system. He said the trial of a sitting First Vice President carries significant historical and legal importance.

In a separate application, Machar asked the court to admit his written statements into evidence, saying this would reduce the need for judges to manually record lengthy testimony and speed up the proceedings. He recalled that Presiding Judge James Alala Deng had earlier remarked that his hand had become tired from taking extensive notes.

The prosecution initially objected to Machar making the request personally, arguing that all applications should be submitted through his legal team. His lawyers later filed a formal written application seeking permission to audio and video record the remainder of his testimony.

Lead defense lawyer Geri Raimondo Legge said the recordings would help the defense verify the accuracy of the official court transcripts, identify any discrepancies, and better prepare legal submissions.

Lead prosecutor Ajo Ony'Ohisa acknowledged receiving the application and requested additional time to submit the prosecution's written response.

The court ruled that Machar's testimony will continue while awaiting the prosecution's response and adjourned the trial until Monday, August 10, 2026, when Machar is expected to resume his defense.

Dr. Machar and his seven co-defendants—Puot Kang Chuol, Mam Pal Dhuor, Gatwech Lam Puoch, Lt. Gen. Gabriel Duop Lam, Camilo Gatmai Kel, Mading Yak Riek, and Dominic Gatgok Riek—face charges including murder, conspiracy, terrorism, treason, destruction of public property, and crimes against humanity.

All the accused have denied the charges.

Speaking in Nyijwad (New Fangak), Gen. Parumi expressed frustration over the continued shortage of uniforms and other essential equipment for Agwelek-SSPDF forces.

"If the government fails to provide us with uniforms and other basic needs, we'll try to get them in our own way," he said.

He noted that before the Agwelek forces were integrated into the SSPDF, they purchased their own uniforms and military equipment and could resort to the same approach again if government support does not improve.
