Heart valve disease can develop so gradually that symptoms such as breathlessness and declining stamina are dismissed as simply getting older.
But treatment has also changed. Instead of thinking only about the first operation, cardiac surgeons are increasingly planning how today's decisions could affect a patient's treatment options 10, 20 or even 30 years from now.
We spoke with Singapore cardiac surgeon Dr Loh Yee Jim about lifetime valve management, the difference between mechanical and tissue valves, symptoms to look out for, and why even your oral health can matter to your heart.

Can what you wear to bed actually make you more comfortable at night?
We reviewed Sleebbee’s bamboo lyocell pyjamas in Singapore’s heat, comparing them with cotton and satin sleepwear to see how they performed for breathability, stretch, moisture handling and overall comfort.
The review also looks at whether this type of sleepwear could be especially useful during pregnancy and postpartum — and whether the S$98 price is justified.
