Hida Kokubunji Temple, Takayama
Before heading into Takayama’s famous old town, take a moment to notice one of the city’s historic landmarks: Hida Kokubunji Temple.
The temple traces its history back to the 8th century, when provincial Kokubunji temples were established across Japan under Emperor Shōmu. The temple you see today has been rebuilt several times over the centuries, but it remains one of Takayama’s important historical sites.
One detail that makes Hida Kokubunji especially easy to recognize is the three-story pagoda, standing beside a huge ancient ginkgo tree.
And unlike some of Japan’s more famous temples, this one sits right in the city—making it an easy stop while exploring Takayama on foot.

Most people come to Kiyomizu-dera for the view. But did you know the temple’s name actually comes from its “pure water”? 🇯🇵
Kiyomizu-dera means “Pure Water Temple,” named after the Otowa Waterfall that flows through the temple grounds.
Visitors traditionally drink from three streams of the waterfall, with each believed to bring a different benefit—longevity, success in school, and a fortunate love life. The catch? Drinking from all three is traditionally considered greedy, so choose wisely. 😉

Did you know there’s more to Shirakawa-go than the famous thatched-roof houses? 🇯🇵
This is Deai Bridge, one of the main walking routes connecting the parking area with the historic village of Ogimachi.
And there’s a reason this simple bridge can feel like part of the experience. As you cross the Sho River, the view opens up to Shirakawa-go’s surrounding mountains—especially beautiful when everything is green in summer. 🌿
Shirakawa-go is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, best known for its traditional gassho-zukuri houses, but what I enjoyed most was slowing down between the sightseeing stops: the river, mountains, fresh air, and the sound of the water flowing underneath the bridge.
🎧 Turn up the sound and listen to the river.
