A series of earthquakes has been recorded offshore near Pangasinan and the Ilocos Region, close to the area of the Manila Trench, prompting residents in western and coastal parts of Luzon to stay alert and monitor official advisories.

The Manila Trench is an active offshore tectonic feature located west of Luzon and Mindoro. Because of its location, earthquake activity along this trench is relevant not only to Pangasinan and Ilocos, but also to nearby western-facing provinces such as Zambales, including coastal communities facing the West Philippine Sea.

For Zambales residents, this does not mean that a major earthquake or tsunami is certain to happen. However, it is a reminder that the province sits near an offshore seismic zone that authorities and scientists continue to monitor. Previous reports have also linked some offshore or western Luzon tremors to movement near the Manila Trench.

PHIVOLCS has identified the Manila Trench as one of the country’s active trenches capable of generating strong earthquakes. Some tsunami scenario models have also included parts of Zambales among coastal areas that may need preparedness in a worst-case offshore earthquake event.

Residents in Zambales, Pangasinan, Ilocos, and nearby coastal areas are advised to remain calm but prepared. Secure heavy objects at home, prepare emergency go bags, know evacuation routes, and monitor updates only from official sources such as PHIVOLCS, local disaster risk reduction offices, and local government units.

In case of strong shaking, remember: Drop, Cover, and Hold On. After the shaking stops, move away from damaged structures. If you are near the coast and feel a strong or long earthquake, do not wait for an official warning before moving to higher ground or farther inland.
