In Papua New Guinea, many coastal communities depend on the mangroves for their livelihood. Mangrove tree have been harvested over generations for construction materials and firewood. Mangroves provide a habitat for fish, crab, shellfish, birds and reptiles.

Mangroves also provide a natural defense against storm surges, coastal erosion, and coastal flooding. An analysis conducted by governments Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA) has highlighted community-based mangrove planting as a cost - effective measure for coastal communities. Unfortunately, over exploitation and degradation of mangroves areas means communities are losing this protection.

Gere-Groves mangroves protection is one of the newly established group volunteering with Conservation and Environmental Protection Authority (CEPA) to protect all species of mangroves and also our Marine Ecosystem in Bootless Bay area.
Gere-Groves is located some distance away from Gereka village and 10 to 15 minutes drive from Port Moresby city. We also engaged with our Alliance team starting from Tubusere all the way to Vabukori with the help of our major support team CEPA, Jica and the UPNG research center at Motupore island.
