​Why It Matters
​When a pregnant woman contracts malaria, the parasites can congregate in the placenta. This interferes with the transfer of oxygen and nutrients to the baby, which can lead to:
​Maternal Anemia: Malaria destroys red blood cells, causing fatigue and weakness for the mother.
​Low Birth Weight: This is one of the most common consequences and a leading cause of infant mortality.
​Premature Delivery: Infections can trigger early labor.
​Severe Malaria: In some cases, it can lead to organ failure or cerebral malaria if not treated promptly.
​Prevention Strategies
​Preventing malaria is the most effective way to ensure a healthy pregnancy. The World Health Organization (WHO) typically recommends a three-pronged approach:
​Insecticide-Treated Nets (ITNs): Sleeping under a long-lasting treated net every night is the primary line of defense against mosquito bites.
​Intermittent Preventive Treatment (IPTp): This involves taking specific antimalarial doses (usually sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine) during routine prenatal visits, starting in the second trimester.
​Indoor Residual Spraying: Using approved insecticides on the interior walls of the home to kill mosquitoes.
​Signs and Symptoms
​Symptoms can sometimes be subtle or mistaken for general pregnancy discomfort. Watch for:
​Fever or chills
​Headaches
​Muscle or joint pain
​Nausea and vomiting
​General malaise or unusual tiredness
​Important: Any fever during pregnancy should be treated as a medical emergency. If you experience these symptoms, seek testing immediately at a healthcare facility.
​Safe Treatment

​Burping: Burp the baby halfway through a feeding and again at the end to prevent gas and spit-up.
​Hydration: For the first six months, breast milk or formula provides all necessary hydration; supplemental water is generally not recommended.
​2. Hygiene and Skin Care
​Umbilical Cord Care: Keep the cord stump clean and dry. It usually falls off within 1 to 3 weeks. Fold the diaper down to avoid irritation.
​Sponge Baths: Stick to sponge baths until the umbilical cord stump has fallen off and any circumcision has healed.
​Diapering: Change diapers frequently to prevent rash. Clean from front to back, especially for girls, to prevent infection.
​3. Safe Sleep Practices
​To reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), follow the ABC method:
​A - Alone: The baby should sleep in their own crib or bassinet, not in a bed with adults.
​B - Back: Always place the baby on their back to sleep, never on their side or stomach.
​C - Crib: Use a firm sleep surface with a tight-fitting sheet. Keep the crib free of pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, or bumper pads.
​4. Health and Safety
​Hand Washing: Ensure everyone washes their hands before touching the newborn, as their immune systems are still developing.
​Temperature Regulation: Dress the baby in one layer more than what an adult is wearing comfortably. Avoid over-bundling, which can lead to overheating.
​Support the Neck: Always support the baby's head and neck when carrying or transitioning them, as their neck muscles are not yet strong enough to hold their head up.
​When to Contact a Pediatrician
​Seek medical advice if you notice any of the following:
​A re**al temperature of 38°C (100.4°F) or higher.
​Poor feeding or refusal to eat for multiple sessions.
​Dehydration (fewer than 6 wet diapers in 24 hours).
