World Breastfeeding Week: Prof Orluwene Reaffirms Management's Commitment To Child And Maternal Health.

The Management of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital has restated its commitment to the promotion of child and maternal healthcare, particularly among nursing mothers.

Chief Medical Director Prof Chituru Godwil Orluwene DSSRS JP, who stated this while declaring open this year's World Breastfeeding Week celebration, commended the Baby Friendly Hospital initiative committee, for being in the forefront of championing the cause.

Prof Orluwene charged departments, units and staff, to ensure active participation in all the programmes lined up to commemorate the event, including training sessions, community outreach and awareness creation.

He described this year's theme, 'Breastfeeding For A Sustainable Start In Life: Strengthen What Works", as very appropriate, as it goes beyond discovering new ideas to revisiting the practices that have proven to be effective and thus strengthen the hospital's implementation on a consistent basis.

The CMD assured that management is committed to implementing policies that address the special needs of Nursing mothers and their infants.

As part of activities designed to add color to the event, the CMD presented insecticide treated mosquito nets to nursing mothers who came early for immunization and their expectant counterparts, who came for antenatal, for which they all expressed profound gratitude to the hospital management.

Several Goodwill messages were presented by the UPTH chapter of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria MDCAN and the National Association of Nigerian Nurses And Midwives NANNM, ,among others.

The Management team accompanying the CMD included the Chairman Medical Advisory Committee, Prof Richard Echem, Deputy Chairman Medical Advisory Committee, Prof Justina Alegbeleye, Prof Kennedy Nkporbu, Head Nursing Services, Mrs Victoria Amagboruju, Head Media and Publicity Mr Kem Daniel-Elebiga and Head Security Mr Mathew Iyeanyi.

August 2026: New Season, New Opportunities.

It is with a special gratitude to God that I joyfully and thankfully welcome you, esteemed UPTH family and community to August 2026, a new month and indeed a new season.

I commend management and staff for your sacrifice, diligence and resilience towards ensuring the success of my administration, in our quest to render quality service to the public who visit our hospital for medical attention.

It's already eight months into 2026, and as the year journeys to the last quarter, I encourage us to remain steadfast, focused and optimistic that better days lie ahead for the hospital and of course ourselves, who have invested time, trust and labor, in making UPTH far better than she was in January when I resumed as CMD.

I salute the patients who have been receiving services in our facility for their trust, cooperation and commendation of our efforts these past months to fix things, in order to serve the public better.

Be assured that this August, we shall increase the momentum and scope of improved service delivery, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration's Renewed Hope Agenda.

Once again, welcome to August 2026, a new season and new opportunities, Happy new month.

UPTH CMD HONOURS CONTRACT SECURITY PERSONNEL FOR EXEMPLARY SERVICE AND PROFESSIONALISM

The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), Prof. Chituru Godwil Orluwene, DSSRS, JP, has commended and rewarded a contract security personnel, Mrs. Emenike Martha C. N., for her exceptional dedication to duty, professionalism, and exemplary service to patients and visitors within the hospital.

The recognition emphasized the Management's commitment to promoting excellence, integrity, and a patient-centred service culture across the institution. Prof. Orluwene noted that diligence, emotional intelligence, honesty, and selfless service are invaluable virtues that not only enhance institutional reputation but also inspire confidence among patients and the public.

Speaking during the presentation of Mrs. Emenike, the CMD revealed that numerous commendations had been received regarding her outstanding conduct while on duty. According to him, reports highlighting her compassion towards patients in the Labour Ward, readiness to assist visitors with directions, courteous disposition, and dedicated integrity had attracted widespread admiration, including positive recognition on social media platforms.

Prof. Orluwene described Mrs. Emenike as a worthy ambassador of the values UPTH seeks to institutionalize, emphasizing that every member of staff, regardless of cadre or employment status, plays a vital role in delivering quality healthcare services. He encouraged her to remain steadfast in her commitment to excellence, assuring that dedication and outstanding performance will always be appreciated and rewarded.

The CMD further reaffirmed the resolve of the hospital's Management to prioritize staff welfare and sustain a culture of recognising and celebrating employees who distinguish themselves through professionalism, integrity, and exceptional service delivery.

Responding to the honour, Mrs. Emenike expressed profound gratitude to the Chief Medical Director and the Management of UPTH for the recognition. She described the gesture as a source of encouragement that would further strengthen her resolve to serve with greater commitment, compassion, and professionalism.

She attributed her work ethic to the culture of accountability, discipline, and excellence championed by the current administration since Prof. Orluwene assumed office in January, noting that the leadership has continued to inspire staff to give their best in the discharge of their responsibilities.

The recognition serves as another attestation to UPTH's resolute commitment to rewarding excellence, fostering a motivated workforce, and strengthening a culture of compassionate, patient-focused healthcare service delivery.

Locum Staff Renumeration: Prof Promises Review, Assures Timely Release.

Chief Medical Director Prof Chituru Godwil Orluwene DSSRS. JP has commended the expression of gratitude by Locum staff of the hospital.

Prof Orluwene expressed this when he received gift items from a delegation representing Locum staff, who were on a courtesy visit to show their gratitude for management's efforts to address their welfare concerns.

He said the thinking and spirit behind their goodwill gesture is heartwarming, because what an individual gives is a direct reflection of what the individual possesses within.

The CMD assured all Locum staff that management is making efforts towards the upward review of their remuneration, while current delays in their payment arising from operational and human factors will soon come to an end.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation Miss Anita Kinikachi Nworgu, expressed gratitude of all the Locum staff to management for its favourable disposition, in addressing workers welfare and appealed for an upward review and timely release of their remuneration.

The Management team present during the visit included the Chairman Medical Advisory Committee, Prof Richard Echem, Head Finance Mr Princwill Iyeanomi and Head Media & Publicity.

Cardio-Renal-Metabolic Conference: Prof Orluwene Voice Support for Integrated Patient-Centered Response System.

The University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital has reaffirmed its readiness to partner with critical stakeholders including professional bodies, industry and the government, towards advancing integrated Cardio-Renal-Metabolic (CRM) care in the interest of patients presenting such ailments.

Chief Medical Medical Director Prof Chituru Godwil Orluwene DSSRS. JP. who disclosed this during a Cardio-Renal-Metabolic Conference which held at the hospital auditorium, described the gathering as unique, bringing the various subspecialties concerned to cross fertilize ideas and forge a reliable, resilient and responsive health system to handle epidermic.

Prof Orluwene who cautioned against trying to play catch-up with CRM, however advised that a strategic approach that builds care that is integrated, workforce that is empowered and patients who are true partners will not only respond but be ahead of the cases when presented.

The CRM confab which is expected to have several experts presenting papers, had as its theme " Advancing Integrated Cardio-Renal-Metabolic care : Putting Patients First.

The event had in attendance a former Chief Medical Director Prof Aaron Ojule, Deputy Chairman Medical Advisory Committee, Prof Justina Alegbeleye, Prof Olufemi Omitola, amongst others.

Life Style Medicine Conference: Prof Orluwene Assures Institutional Support.

The Management of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching has welcomed the choice of Port Harcourt as host city for the eight International conference billed to hold between 26th and 28th of November 2026.

Chief Medical Director Prof Chituru Godwil Orluwene DSSRS. JP. expressed this when a delegation of the Local Organizing Committee, paid him an advocacy visit to intimate management about the international conference.

Prof Orluwene who applauded the strong footing Life Style Medicine had established in the teaching hospital, assured that as an institution, the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital will identify with the International conference being the first time such distinguished gathering will be hosted in Rivers State, and an opportunity for key stakeholders in the healthcare value chain in the state to come together and ensure a memorable and successful hosting.

He also commended a medical Elder Dr Mrs Bernade Korubo for her Frontline role in the profession, noting that her involvement with the Life Style Medicine Society, will yield a positive outcome.

Earlier, the leader of the six person delegation and LOC Chairman Dr Affiong John, explained that this year's conference is very significant being the first to be hosted in the state, recalling that previous ones had always been hosted by Lagos and Abuja.

She also disclosed that the event will help sensitize this part of the country about the true nature and practice of the new branch of Medicine, as the international President of the society will be on ground to grace the occasion.
