When Glaber offers Gannicus a place in his army to fight against Spartacus and the rebels, Gannicus refuses to become a weapon for the Romans. Glaber tries to tempt him by returning his rudis, reminding him that he is a free man and suggesting that he can choose his own fate.
But Gannicus is not interested in serving Glaber or helping Rome destroy the rebels. Rather than accept Glaber’s offer, he makes his own choice. His actions soon make his answer clear, he attacks the Roman guards escorting Ilithyia and leaves his rudis behind as a powerful rejection of Glaber’s supposed freedom.
Gannicus may not initially believe strongly in Spartacus’ cause, but he refuses to stand with Glaber. His decision ultimately puts him on the side of the rebels and shows that his freedom means choosing his own path rather than becoming a s£rvænt of Rome again.
