The Day My Mother Taught Me the Value of Honesty
One childhood memory has stayed with me for years, and even now, I can still remember it as if it happened yesterday.
I was still very young when my elder brother secretly went into one of our neighbor's apartment and stole some money. With the money, he bought a few things to eat and gave me a share. At that age, I didn't fully understand what stealing meant. I was simply excited that my brother had brought me something.
Later that day, our neighbor started looking for the missing money. Everyone was wondering who could have taken it, but no one knew the truth.
When my mother came home, I innocently told her everything. I wasn't trying to expose my brother—I was just telling her how we got the things we were eating. As soon as she heard my story, she realized what had happened.
She didn't ignore it or try to cover it up because it was her own child. Instead, she disciplined both of us. Then she did something I will never forget. She sent us back to our neighbor's house to confess that we were responsible and to apologize.
I was embarrassed, scared, and ashamed. But that experience became one of the greatest lessons of my life.
Today, I understand that my mother wasn't trying to disgrace us. She was teaching us that honesty is more valuable than protecting a wrong action. She wanted us to know that every action has consequences and that admitting our mistakes is the first step toward becoming responsible adults.
Looking back now, I'm grateful for that lesson. It shaped my character and taught me to value integrity.
To every parent reading this, your children are always learning from the choices you make. Correct them with love, discipline them with wisdom, and teach them to take responsibility for their actions. They may not appreciate it today, but one day they will look back and thank you for raising them to choose honesty over wrongdoing.
