💔 SHE WAS 21, GRIEVING HER MOTHER AND FAR FROM HOME — NOW HER FAMILY WANTS ANSWERS

📍 NORFOLK, VIRGINIA
🇺🇸 USA

Jaimie Bethea was supposed to come home soon.

The 21-year-old Navy communications specialist had spent months aboard the USS Fort Lauderdale, but her family says the long deployment became increasingly difficult as she struggled with the loss of her mother and worsening mental-health problems.

Bethea's mother had died from cancer shortly before Jaimie left for deployment. Relatives and friends say the young sailor continued dealing with grief while at sea, where they say she experienced severe depression, panic attacks and other difficulties.

Then the deployment kept getting extended.

According to people close to Bethea, the repeated changes made an already difficult situation even harder. Her family also says she had trouble consistently receiving prescribed medication while aboard the ship.

Jaimie's sister, Arianna Calderon, now wants to know whether more could have been done once concerns about her sister's wellbeing became known.

She has questioned the level of mental-health support available aboard smaller Navy vessels and why Jaimie remained on the ship despite her reported struggles.

Bethea died by su***de on June 20, just weeks before the USS Fort Lauderdale was expected to return to Norfolk.

Her death has left her family not only grieving, but asking whether gaps in care and the demands of an extended deployment contributed to what she was going through.

“I lost my world,” Calderon said, explaining that what she wants now is answers and some sense of justice.

The Navy has not publicly addressed all of the family's questions about Bethea's treatment and care.

⚖️ TEXAS FORMER TEACHER AVOIDS FELONY CONVICTION AFTER ADMITTING IMPROPER RELATIONSHIPS WITH TWO TEEN BOYS

📍 WACO, TEXAS
🇺🇸 USA

A former Texas teacher who pleaded guilty to having improper sexual relationships with two 16-year-old boys has been sentenced to six years of deferred probation instead of a prison term.

Shelby Dawn Lashombe, 25, was a teacher and coach at Valley Mills High School when she was arrested in September 2025. The two boys attended different schools and were not her students.

Lashombe pleaded guilty in April 2026 to two counts of improper relationship between educator and student, both second-degree felonies carrying up to 20 years in prison. Prosecutors dismissed two separate child-sexual-assault charges as part of the plea agreement.

Judge Thomas West of the 19th State District Court approved the agreement on September 25. Lashombe received six years of deferred probation, a $1,000 fine, four weekends in jail and 60 days of county work detail.

If she successfully completes the probation, there will be no final felony conviction. She has also surrendered her teaching certificate and no longer works as a teacher.

The judge said testimony from one of the boys' fathers and Lashombe's therapist influenced his decision. The father told the court his son was doing well academically, playing football, attending counseling and had been accepted to several universities. He said he did not want Lashombe imprisoned.

The boy's mother gave the court a very different account. She said her son had experienced anxiety and depression, withdrawn from family members and changed some of his usual activities. She accused Lashombe of betraying the trust placed in her as an educator.

Lashombe's attorney also argued that the boys were not her students and that they had contacted her through social media.

The courtroom was reportedly filled with supporters during the sentencing hearing, including the father of one of the boys.

Lashombe now works at a furniture retailer in Waco.

🏀 WNBA STAR ARIKE OGUNBOWALE ARRESTED AFTER ALLEGED MIAMI NIGHTCLUB ALTERCATION — CHARGE LATER DROPPED

📍 MIAMI, FLORIDA
🇺🇸 USA

Arike Ogunbowale's championship celebration took an unexpected turn after the WNBA star was arrested following an alleged altercation at a Miami nightclub.

Ogunbowale, 29, was celebrating with teammates at E11EVEN after helping her team win the Unrivaled championship. She had scored 19 points in the title game earlier that night.

According to the police report, a security guard was attempting to remove a group from the club when Ogunbowale allegedly punched him. Officers said surveillance footage captured the incident, and she was subsequently booked on a misdemeanor battery charge.

She was released after being taken into custody.

The Dallas Wings and Unrivaled both acknowledged the incident at the time and said they were gathering more information.

There was later a significant development: Miami-Dade prosecutors dropped the battery charge in May 2026, about two months after the arrest.

The arrest and booking remain part of the public record, but Ogunbowale was not convicted of the battery charge.

⚖️ FORMER FLORIDA DEPUTY ACQUITTED IN DEATH OF AIR FORCE AIRMAN ROGER FORTSON

📍 FORT WALTON BEACH, FLORIDA
🇺🇸 USA

Former Okaloosa County sheriff’s deputy Eddie Duran has been found not guilty of manslaughter in the 2024 death of 23-year-old U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Roger Fortson.

The case began on May 3, 2024, when Duran was sent to Fortson’s apartment after a reported domestic disturbance. The report later turned out to be false.

Fortson was inside his apartment and speaking with his girlfriend when he answered the door. Body-camera footage showed him holding a handgun pointed toward the floor before Duran opened fire.

Prosecutors argued that Fortson did not make an aggressive move toward the deputy. The defense maintained that Duran believed he faced an immediate threat and acted according to his law-enforcement training.

Duran was later fired by the sheriff’s office after an internal investigation concluded that his life was not in danger when he fired.

After a little more than two hours of deliberation, jurors returned a not-guilty verdict Thursday.

The State Attorney’s Office said it respects the jury’s decision, while noting that the prosecution had to prove the charge beyond a reasonable doubt.

Fortson’s family also has a separate federal civil-rights lawsuit connected to his death.

đź’” GEORGIA WOMAN GETS 40 YEARS IN PRISON AFTER ADOPTED BOY ESCAPES ABUSIVE HOME

📍 GEORGIA 🇺🇸 USA

An 11-year-old boy managed to get out of a Georgia home in July 2023 after investigators said he had endured years of abuse at the hands of his adoptive mother.

Chloe Jackson-Jones, 42, has now been sentenced to 40 years in a state correctional facility, followed by 20 years of probation.

She pleaded guilty to aggravated assault with family violence, two counts of false imprisonment and 17 counts of first-degree cruelty to children.

The case came to light when two strangers found the frightened boy running through a neighborhood. Investigators said he appeared to have suffered prolonged abuse and neglect.

According to investigators, evidence recovered from Jackson-Jones' cellphone documented repeated abuse. The boy also told authorities he had been restrained and locked inside parts of the home, sometimes without basic necessities.

Authorities said he eventually found a way out of the house and escaped through a second-story window.

Jackson-Jones had adopted the boy when he was 8 years old.

Prosecutors agreed to the plea deal partly to prevent the child from having to relive the abuse by testifying in court. The district attorney's office said it would have pursued a longer sentence if the law had allowed it.

Jackson-Jones was arrested eight days after the boy escaped. The child was later placed in the care of Georgia's Department of Family and Children Services.

📍 HOUSTON, TEXAS
🇺🇸 USA

A custody dispute in Houston ended in tragedy after 4-year-old Vivian Savella was fatally shot shortly after a judge placed her in her father’s primary care.

According to Houston police and the family’s attorneys, a custody hearing had taken place earlier that Tuesday. Vivian was expected to go home with her father, Aaron Savella, later that evening.

But shortly before 6 p.m., officers were called to a home on Terra Reserve Place after gunshots were reported.

Vivian was found dead inside the home. Her mother, Cibelle Savella, was also found seriously injured and was taken to a hospital. She died the following day. Police are investigating the deaths as an apparent murder-su***de.

A stepfather and babysitter were reportedly inside the home when the shots were heard. Police have said there was no indication that either was involved.

Vivian’s family described her as deeply loved and said her father had followed the custody proceedings and was expecting to bring his daughter home.

The circumstances surrounding the custody dispute and what led to the shooting remain under investigation.

Vivian was only four years old.

⚠️ CHRISTa PIKE REMAINS CRITICALLY ILL AS VICTIM’S FAMILY RECOUNTS FAILED EX*****ON

📍 NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE
🇺🇸 USA

Christa Pike remains in critical condition in a Tennessee hospital days after the state’s attempt to execute her failed, while the family of her 1995 murder victim says they are still trying to understand what happened inside the ex*****on chamber.

Pike, 50, was scheduled to be executed at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution on September 30. Her attorneys say she remains unconscious and is receiving intensive medical care, with doctors yet to provide a clear prognosis.

May and Raul Martinez, the mother and stepfather of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, were among the witnesses inside the prison.

The couple said they watched as Pike remained alive after the first dose of the ex*****on drug was administered. They said they could see movement and that the procedure continued with a second dose before witnesses were eventually instructed to leave.

Raul Martinez said the experience left them confused about how the ex*****on could have gone so wrong.

For May, the failed ex*****on also brought back memories of the daughter she lost more than 30 years ago. She said Colleen was a shy young woman who had been attending a Job Corps program in Tennessee when she was killed in 1995.

May said the family has spent more than three decades without Colleen, missing birthdays, holidays and other family moments.

She also said she still wants answers about what happened during the ex*****on and what will happen to Pike now.

“I think the state owes me a big apology,” Martinez said, according to the family's account.

Meanwhile, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has halted the state's remaining scheduled ex*****ons for 2026 and ordered an independent review of what happened during Pike's ex*****on.

Pike's attorneys are also seeking answers as she remains hospitalized under law-enforcement supervision.

The circumstances surrounding the failed ex*****on and Pike's medical condition remain under review.

🚨 TEXAS WOMAN ACCUSED OF BRINGING CHILD TO DOCTOR IN EXCHANGE FOR PRESCRIPTION PILLS

📍 TYLER, TEXAS
🇺🇸 USA

A 37-year-old Texas woman is facing a serious child-sexual-abuse charge after police accused her of repeatedly taking a child under 14 to a doctor and remaining present during alleged abuse.

Alicia Evonne Sanchez, also known as Alicia Evonne Seguin, was arrested Wednesday and charged with continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14. Her bond was set at $3 million.

According to police, Sanchez allegedly brought the child to the office of 56-year-old doctor Kenneth Haygood on at least 10 occasions. Investigators say the child later told a counselor that Haygood gave Sanchez a bag containing prescription pills.

Police allege Sanchez remained in the room during the incidents and accepted the medication in connection with what was happening.

Haygood is already serving an eight-year prison sentence after pleading guilty in 2025 to sexually assaulting two adult female patients. Prosecutors had previously filed child-sexual-abuse allegations against him, but those charges were dismissed as part of that plea agreement.

The current case involving the child is separate, and Sanchez is now facing her own criminal charge.

If convicted, Sanchez could face decades in prison, including a possible sentence of up to 99 years or life under Texas law.

The allegations against Sanchez have not been proven in court.

🚨 TENNESSEE HAS NOW HAD TWO FAILED EX*****ON ATTEMPTS IN 2026

📍 TENNESSEE
🇺🇸 USA

For the second time this year, Tennessee has been unable to complete a scheduled ex*****on.

The first case involved Tony Von Carruthers on May 21. His ex*****on was stopped after officials were unable to establish the required backup IV access. No ex*****on drugs were administered, and Gov. Bill Lee later granted Carruthers a one-year reprieve.

Four months later, Christa Pike’s ex*****on also failed.

On Sept. 30, officials administered two doses of the lethal-injection drug, but Pike remained alive. She was eventually taken from Riverbend Maximum Security Institution to an outside medical facility. The Tennessee Department of Correction said its established protocol had been followed.

The two cases were very different. Carruthers’ ex*****on was stopped before the drugs were given, while Pike survived after the drugs had been administered.

Court records also identify Dr. Mark Fowler as the physician involved in Carruthers’ ex*****on. His involvement in Pike’s procedure was subsequently reported as well.

Following Pike’s failed ex*****on, Gov. Bill Lee ordered a comprehensive third-party review and called off Tennessee’s remaining scheduled ex*****ons for 2026.

The review is expected to examine what went wrong during Pike’s ex*****on and the state’s ex*****on procedures.

💔 TWO CHILDREN FOUND DEAD IN SOUTH CAROLINA HOME — MOTHER FACES NEGLECT-RELATED HOMICIDE CHARGES

📍 LADSON, SOUTH CAROLINA
🇺🇸 USA

A South Carolina family’s concerns about two children have now become part of a homicide investigation after the siblings were found dead inside their home.

Deputies went to a home on Pinewood Drive Tuesday afternoon for a welfare check. Inside, they found the two children deceased.

Their mother, 31-year-old Justine May, was arrested and charged with two counts of homicide by child neglect, according to court records.

May waived her right to a bond hearing and remains in the Charleston County jail. She is expected in court Nov. 20.

Investigators with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division’s Department of Child Fatalities are working on the case. The children’s cause of death has not been released.

The case has also raised questions about whether warning signs were reported before the children were found. Family members told authorities they had contacted law enforcement within the past month over concerns about May and the children.

May’s former boyfriend, Zachary Deacon, had also been arrested at the same home on Sept. 11 following a reported incident involving May. He was charged with second-degree harassment and later released on bond with a court order barring contact with May or the children.

Authorities have not announced whether anyone else will face charges as the investigation continues.
