Somewhere in the freezing depths of the Arctic swims a creature that was already alive when powdered wigs and horse drawn carriages ruled the streets. This is the Greenland shark, and researchers have confirmed it as the longest living vertebrate on the planet, with the oldest individual ever studied estimated at around 392 years old.

Scientists at the University of Copenhagen figured this out using an unusual technique: radiocarbon dating the eye lenses of 28 female Greenland sharks. The center of a shark's eye lens forms before birth and never changes afterward, essentially locking in a chemical timestamp of the exact year that animal was born. By analyzing that tissue, researchers found the sharks in their study likely live somewhere between 272 and 512 years, with the largest specimen, over 16 feet long, landing right around that 392 year estimate.

What makes this species so slow to age is how slowly it does everything else. Greenland sharks grow at a crawling rate of less than half an inch per year, and females don't even reach sexual maturity until they're roughly 150 years old, an almost incomprehensible timeline compared to virtually every other vertebrate on Earth. That extreme longevity appears to come down to a combination of an ultra slow metabolism, cold adapted physiology, and unusually resilient cellular maintenance built for surviving centuries in near freezing water.

Before this discovery, the bowhead whale held the longevity record at around 211 years, a number the Greenland shark blows past even at the low end of its estimated range. Some of the sharks studied were likely already swimming the Arctic before the founding of the United States.

Knowing a single Greenland shark could theoretically outlive entire nations, does that change how you think about what "old" even means in the animal kingdom?
