I know some of you are already set in your beliefs, and nothing will convince you that your genetics aren’t the issue.

But I promise you, if you put in that extra effort, it will count.

We’re not all blessed with the same amount of genetic potential, and that’s okay. But believe me, the effort you put into understanding and caring for your hair can make a difference in how much of that potential you actually reach.

So, do with this information what you will.

You can decide to put in the effort and see where it takes you, or you can take the easier route and blame your genes.

The choice is yours.

We should be able to get good hair care services for our natural hair, especially from professionals who understand and regularly work with our hair texture. There is no excuse for incompetence.

Yes, clients should learn their hair and know how to speak up, but when you pay someone who claims to be skilled in a particular profession, the responsibility should not fall entirely on you to teach them how to do their job.

Black hair deserves skilled, gentle, and knowledgeable care, whether you’re wearing your natural hair in Nigeria, the UK, the US, or anywhere else in the world.

Hairstylists, we need you to do better. We deserve better.

If properly caring for natural African hair requires more time, skill, or effort, charge accordingly. But please, learn how to handle it.

Our hair is a huge part of our culture and lifestyle. Getting our hair done should not be an experience we dread.

And especially as African hairstylists, how can you not know how to properly care for the hair that grows from our own communities?

We need to do better. We need this to stop.

The joy of finding someone who is gentle and considerate with your natural hair.

Someone who doesn’t see natural hair as an inconvenience or a burden.

That feeling? Magical.

Your hair will never thrive if it’s constantly being mishandled at the salon.

While we wait for these salons to catch up and do better, you can take a step to protect your hair by prepping it properly before your appointment. Learn how to care for your hair yourself, and whenever possible, choose a salon that actually understands natural hair.

If you’re serious about maintaining a healthy crown, how your hair is handled at the salon matters just as much as the products you use.
