DIALYSIS OVERVIEW..
Dialysis is more than a machine, it is a life-sustaining treatment.
When the kidneys can no longer adequately remove waste, excess fluid, and electrolytes from the blood, dialysis helps perform some of these essential functions.
There are two main types:
🔹 Hemodialysis : blood is filtered through a dialyzer, often called an artificial kidney.
🔹 Peritoneal dialysis : the lining of the abdomen (peritoneum) is used as a natural filtering membrane.
As nurses, our role goes beyond monitoring the dialysis machine.
We assess the patient before, during, and after treatment.
We monitor:
• Vital signs
• Fluid balance
• Vascular access
• Signs of complications
• Patient response to treatment
We also provide education, emotional support, infection prevention, medication guidance, and coordination of care.
For a patient receiving dialysis, compassionate nursing care can make a difficult treatment journey safer and more manageable.
Good dialysis care is not only about removing waste from the blood. It is also about caring for the person behind the treatment.
ADDICTION
Addiction is more than a bad habit.
It is a complex condition that can affect a person's brain, behavior, relationships, work, and overall health.
A person struggling with addiction may continue using a substance or engaging in a behavior despite experiencing harmful consequences.
Addiction can involve:
• Alcohol
• Drugs
• Prescription medications
• Gambling
• Other compulsive behaviors
As healthcare professionals, our role is not to judge.
We should listen, assess, educate, support, and connect people with appropriate treatment.
Recovery may involve counselling, medical treatment, rehabilitation, family support, and ongoing follow-up.
Most importantly, a person struggling with addiction is still a person deserving of dignity, compassion, safety, and appropriate care.
Early intervention can make a difference.
