Maupassant and Fougère Royale
Among the admirers of the House was Guy de Maupassant, a great lover of perfumes. In a letter addressed to Dr. Maurice de Fleury, he paid tribute to the talent of Houbigant’s perfumers

“Breathe in Fougère Royale, and you will tell me that it evokes forests and moorlands in an extraordinary way—not their flowers, but their greenery. Houbigant also creates Chypre like no one else. His creations are clear and truly expressive of their origins… Forgive me for this digression; you have perhaps touched upon my greatest passion.”

What makes a fragrance a Fougère?

A Fougère is not defined by the scent of the fern itself. It is defined by a distinctive olfactory architecture.

Traditionally, the classic Fougère accord is built around three essential pillars:

Lavender — aromatic freshness
Coumarin — warm, hay-like softness
Oakmoss — deep, green and earthy character

Around this signature accord, bergamot often brings brightness to the opening, while geranium reinforces its fresh, aromatic heart.

This structure was born in 1882 with Houbigant’s Fougère Royale, created by Paul Parquet — the fragrance that established an entirely new olfactory family.
