LILGA 2025 Labour Report – Key Facts & Findings (January–December 2025)

In 2025, the Liberia Labour and Governance Alliance (LILGA) conducted labour rights monitoring across Margibi, Grand Bassa, Sinoe, B**g, Grand Cape Mount, and major cities including Monrovia, Kakata, Buchanan, Ganta, and Gbarnga. Investigations covered high-risk sectors such as rubber plantations (Jeety Rubber, Salala Rubber, Firestone), agriculture concessions (Liberia Agricultural Company), mining communities (B**g, Sinoe near Sapo National Park, Grand Cape Mount/Bea Mountain), construction sites, and urban informal markets.

LILGA documented widespread labour violations including unpaid overtime, discrimination against Liberian workers, unsafe workplaces with no Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) protections, lack of first aid, weak labour inspections, and limited union representation, especially for contract workers.

Child Labour & Forced Labour Snapshot (Aug–Nov 2025):
• 300 cases of child labour and forced child labour in plantations and mining communities
• 1,700+ cases of forced child labour linked to street vending across Montserrado, Kakata, Buchanan, Ganta, and Gbarnga
• Total recorded cases: Over 2,000 children affected

Children were found working in hazardous mining activities, rubber tapping, farm labor, and urban street trading, many compelled by parents due to poverty and lack of economic support. The report highlights that while minor improvements occurred in a few workplaces, systemic mismanagement, weak law enforcement, corruption, and poor labour governance continue to endanger workers and children nationwide.

LILGA calls for urgent reforms, stronger inspections, accountability at the Ministry of Labour, and nationwide action to protect workers’ rights and end child exploitation.
