Most people have three types of cone photoreceptors in the retina, allowing the brain to compare different wavelengths of light and create the experience of color. People with functional tetrachromacy have four types of cones instead. The additional cone creates another channel of information about incoming light, potentially allowing the brain to distinguish between colors that appear identical to most people.

Tetrachromacy is particularly interesting because the extra cone does not simply add another basic color such as orange. What matters is how its sensitivity overlaps with the other three cone types and how the brain processes the combined signals. Genetic variations involving cone pigments can produce an additional cone type, particularly in some women who carry certain variants of the genes responsible for red and green color vision.

Having four cone types does not automatically mean someone experiences dramatically richer colors. Scientists distinguish between having four types of cones and functional tetrachromatic vision, where the brain actually uses the additional information to perceive differences in color. Some researchers estimate that functional tetrachromats could potentially distinguish vastly more color combinations than typical trichromatic vision, revealing how small differences in retinal biology can reshape something as familiar as the colors we see every day.
