Uhuru means “Freedom” in the Kenyan dialect of Swahili. Uhuru Botanicals is a plant-powered beauty brand which was inspired by Neo Chatyoka's (South African by birth), search for soothing skincare products for her baby daughter Lulu, who had eczema. Unable to find anything suitable, Neo began making her own skincare products for her family using the purest Shea Butter as the base ingredient and co

Used by African communities for generations, mafura butter still hasn't had its moment in mainstream beauty.

But I want to change that.

If you're formulating and only reaching for shea, you're missing out.
Underrated doesn't mean it doesn't work 🌿

Which African botanical should I break down next? 👇

Growing up, I knew Zumbani as the tea you drank when you had a cold. 🌿

It was one of those plants that almost every family seemed to have. Native to Zimbabwe, Zumbani is also found growing across South Africa, Zambia and Mozambique. For generations, it has been brewed into tea, used in steam treatments and even as a natural insect repellent.

Years later, as a cosmetic formulator, I discovered that Zumbani has a place beyond the teacup.

Its antioxidant and soothing properties make it a beautiful ingredient for facial mists, cleansers, scalp treatments and anti-dandruff shampoos.

This is why I’m so passionate about African botanicals. The plants our grandparents trusted have so much to offer modern cosmetic formulation.

Follow for more African botanical ingredients and the science behind them. 🌍✨

Aanisah is a Chemistry and Product Development student. During her time at Uhuru Formulation Academy, she discovered a passion for cosmetic formulation because it gave her the opportunity to combine science, creativity and innovation to develop products that make a real difference in people’s lives.

She spent days researching and formulating with fermented and prebiotic ingredients, exploring their benefits for scalp and hair. It was fascinating to hear her present her findings and see her curiosity turn into practical product development.

Curiosity is where every great formulator begins. Join Uhuru Formulation Academy and start creating with confidence💡

Sarah made her first hair shampoo this week.

She chose to learn cosmetic formulation because of her passion for pharmacy and her interest in understanding how ingredients work beyond medication. By developing practical formulation skills, she’s expanding her knowledge to create safe, effective hair care products while working towards becoming a pharmacist.

Every expert starts with a first formulation, and this is just the beginning of Sarah’s journey.

There is something exciting about blending gums, botanical extracts and carrier oils to create a product that starts as an idea and ends up in someone’s daily routine.

Lately we have had an influx of women who have attended up to our formulation workshops.

This truly makes me happy because it’s the reason I founded Uhuru Botanicals. I wanted to create more than a manufacturing space. I wanted to build a place where women could learn the science behind cosmetic formulation, gain the confidence to create their own products, and understand what works best for their skin.

Our workshops are now in full swing, and it’s been a joy to welcome women from all walks of life. Whether we’re celebrating birthdays, hosting team events, or simply learning together, every session is a reminder that beauty is about knowledge, creativity, and community.

See you Uhuru Botanicals HQ soon💛

8 months ago a client handed me a list of ingredients I’d never worked with before.

I said yes anyway.

7 months of trials, reformulations, and late nights later — three products were born. High-science. High-nature. Skin-safe. Planet-friendly.

Today all three passed the challenge test — a legal requirement under UK cosmetic regulations confirming they’re safe and ready for market.

There’s already a waitlist.

Say yes to the brief that scares you. That’s where the growth is. 🌿

Today I was truly fascinated by the beautiful henna designs on my formulation guests hands.

An exquisite work of art 👌

Starting a beauty brand from your kitchen is more than just making products.

You need the right formulations, branding, pricing, suppliers, systems, and a clear plan to launch properly.

I learnt this while building my own beauty business from the ground up.

That’s why I created my 6-week Kitchen to Brand programme.

I’ll help you turn your ideas into a real beauty brand wherever you are in the world.

DM me for more details.

Marula oil... aka.. “The Tree of Life” — originates from Southern Africa and has long been valued in traditional skincare for its nourishing and protective properties.

It is rich in oleic acid, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids, which help to soften and smooth the skin. Marula oil works primarily by sealing in hydration, reducing transepidermal water loss and strengthening the skin barrier.

This makes it especially beneficial for dry, mature, or environmentally stressed skin.

Great for 🇬🇧 weather ☺️

Its lightweight texture allows it to absorb easily without leaving a heavy residue, while its natural antioxidant content helps support skin resilience against daily environmental stressors.
