It’s often called a “gummy smile,” and most people assume it’s a dental issue — something to do with tooth size or jaw structure. Sometimes it is. But very often, it’s actually about lip position. If the upper lip is a bit shorter or sits higher when you smile, more gum shows than you’d like, even if your teeth are perfectly fine.

Everyone focuses on the front-on selfie — but that’s not where lip filler actually gets assessed. We look at the profile too, using something called Steiner’s line: an imaginary line from the tip of the nose to the chin. Lips that sit just inside that line read as balanced. Push past it and even “subtle” filler can look overdone.

That’s the difference between filler that looks good in photos and filler that looks good on your face, from every angle, in real life.
