My journey with natural skincare started over 21 years ago.
Not as a business.
Not to make money.
For me.

K-BEAUTY: SKINCARE INNOVATION OR CLEVER MARKETING?
Korean skincare has undoubtedly brought some exciting ingredients and beautiful formulations to the UK—but “Korean”, “viral” and “20,000 ppm” do not automatically mean effective, authentic or suitable for your skin.
Let’s look beyond the beautiful packaging and discover what some of these fashionable ingredients actually do.
🧬 PDRN
PDRN is made from purified DNA fragments and may appear on an ingredients list as Sodium DNA or Hydrolyzed DNA. Early topical research is promising, particularly for hydration, elasticity and the appearance of photoaged skin.
However, a topical PDRN serum cannot simply be assumed to produce the same results as injectable polynucleotide treatments. Always ask whether the advertised percentage refers to actual PDRN—or merely a diluted “PDRN complex”.
🧪 EXOSOMES
Exosomes are microscopic communication particles released by cells. They sound incredibly advanced, but human evidence for ordinary topical exosome skincare remains limited.
Many products disclose very little about the exosomes’ source, concentration, isolation, stability or ability to remain active inside the finished product. “Contains exosomes” is therefore not the same as proving that the product delivers meaningful results.
🐌 SNAIL MUCIN
Snail secretion filtrate contains humectants, glycoproteins and other components that may help the skin feel hydrated, soothed and temporarily plumper.
But it isn’t a miracle skin-rebuilding treatment, and the clinical evidence behind many anti-ageing, acne and scar claims is still limited.
💧 HYALURONIC ACID AND “GLASS SKIN”
Hyaluronic acid, glycerin, silicones, emollients and film-forming polymers can attract or hold moisture and reflect light beautifully. This may create an immediate plumped, glossy “glass skin” appearance.
That effect can be genuine—but it is often temporary. It does not necessarily mean that collagen has been rebuilt or cellular ageing has been reversed.
🧴 TOPICAL COLLAGEN
Collagen and hydrolysed collagen may condition the skin, hold moisture and create a smoother surface. That is not the same as replacing the collagen deep inside your dermis.
Some specially formulated collagen peptides show promise, but simply seeing “marine collagen” on a label does not prove that the finished product will rebuild your own collagen.
🌿 CENTELLA, CERAMIDES AND NIACINAMIDE
These are credible cosmetic ingredients. At suitable concentrations and in a properly balanced formula, they may support hydration, comfort and the skin barrier.
However, an impressive ingredient list alone proves nothing about concentration, stability, delivery or how the complete formula performs.
CAN K-BEAUTY DAMAGE YOUR SKIN BARRIER?
Not because it is Korean.
Temporary hydration or plumping is not itself damaging. Problems are more likely when people chase instant “glass skin” by layering numerous toners, acids, exfoliating pads, retinoids, vitamin C products and fragranced formulas together.
Warning signs that your barrier may be struggling include:
• Persistent tightness or dryness
• Burning or stinging—even when applying water
• Redness, peeling or unusual sensitivity
• Sudden breakouts or rebound oiliness
• Products that were previously comfortable beginning to sting
Acids and retinoids can be genuinely effective, but excessive use or inappropriate combinations may increase irritation and water loss through the skin.
Also remember that silicones, preservatives and laboratory-produced ingredients are not automatically unsafe. Equally, “natural”, “vegan” and “plant-derived” do not automatically guarantee that something will suit every skin.
The real questions are:
✔ Is there a complete INCI ingredients list?
✔ Is the active—and its genuine concentration—clearly disclosed?
✔ Has the finished formula been properly tested?
✔ Are the claims supported by evidence rather than influencers?
✔ Is there a traceable UK or EU Responsible Person?
✔ Are you purchasing from the brand or an authorised retailer?
Beautiful packaging sells a dream. Ingredient transparency, formulation quality and realistic claims tell you what you are actually buying.
Your skin barrier is not a trend. Treat it with respect.
